Unit 003 – Assignment Questions Outcome 1 1) Explain what is meant by the following terms. Please give examples. a) Diversity. Diversity means differences, such as sex/gender, race, religious beliefs and language. Example: boy/girl, Asian/European, Muslim /Christian, polish/English. b) Equality Treating everyone equally regardless of their colour, age, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability. Example: Using pictures, dolls, stories, books and dress up clothing representing different cultures, colours and backgrounds within the setting. c) Inclusion. To include all children/families as equal individuals, and to value and respect their individual needs. Example: to encourage girls into more active physical play ie sports and to encourage boys into more creative play ie playing with dolls. To include both genders to do these. d) Discrimination. Treating people differently through prejudice Example: unfair treatment of one person or group, usually because of prejudice about race, ethnicity, age, religion, or gender. Unit 003 – Assignment Questions Outcome 1 2) How could you discriminate in your day-to-day practice' Age can be a big factor of discrimination for example child A is 2 years of age and child B 4 years, child B is very fluent in language ability and child A Only knows a few basic sentences I could discriminate by having a fluent conversation to child B whilst not involving child A. 3) How could this be avoided' By including child A using sign language ie makaton and using recognisable words that they understand. e.g. Age, sex, culture, ability and religion. I would explain to Jason that we are all unique and individual in our own rights and that many people and children have different skin colours I would then show him my skin colour and explain I’m olive skinned and ask him to tell me his skin colour and make it into an enjoyable game I would also involve the other children in the setting into this game to help teach Jason and them that we are all unique with differences and that we are all friends at pre-school Unit 003 – Assignment Questions Outcome 3 1) Please complete the chart below.
