Part 1:
In 1620, 40 England Puritan’s “wanting to secure their English language and heritage, and seeking more economic opportunity, laid plans for a voyage to the New World aboard the Mayflower”(The History Channel). It took them 66 days, but they finally reached the shores on what would later be known as North America. “ The explorer John Smith had names the area Plymouth, and the settlers decided the name was appropriate, as the Mayflower had set sail from the port of Plymouth in England” (The History Channel).
The next several months they spent building their homes and plowing their gardens, but by Spring only half of the Pilgrims ( their new name) were still alive, due to a very cold winter and an epidemic of diseases. It wasn’t too much later that they found out that they were not the only civilization in the new world, there was Indians. The Indians were not to happy about the pilgrims coming to the area and taking over their land. They began to wage war on the pilgrims, so John Smith found and kidnapped a Native American man, know to us as Squanto. He later returned to his tribe, the Pawtuket tribe, as an interpreter and mediator between the Pilgrims and several Indian tribes including the Pokanokets. “ In the fall of 1621, the Pilgrims famously shared a harvest fest with the Pokanokets, the meal is now considered the basis for the Thanksgiving holiday”(The History Channel). After the Thanksgiving fest the Pilgrims spent their time building and making the new colony a robust economy, thanks to agriculture and trading. During this time more and more Europeans sailed to North America to settle down and start a new life. By 1630 the colony started to spread outward, they had more settlers and prospered financially. Later that same year they had developed ten towns, each containing a church with an elder. With so much development came the need for politics, so they formed a government based on their own needs. By 1633, they started to hold annual elections in Plymouth town, in which they elected a governor and seven assistants and together they constituted the governing body of the colony (eventually they would add delegates to this group as well). In 1636, a sort of constitution known as “The Great Fundamentals” was written which stated the laws and ordinances of the colony.
Part 2:
I have been asked to compare a violent and nonviolent revolution from a short list. I chose the American Revolution because of the many lives that were lost during the course of the war. The Orange Revolution is my nonviolent revolution because the war was fought with internet technology internet and peaceful sit ins.
The American Revolution was a major was fought between Great Britain’s 13 North American colonies and Great Britain itself. In 1775 the war broke out in an effort for the colonies to win their independence from their home country. The colonies were tired of the British government raising their taxes and controlling their every move. In 1774 colonial delegates met discuss their issues with the British government, including George Washington, John and Samuel Adams, Patrick Henry and John Jay. At this meeting they drew up several documents, in them they “denounced taxation without representation, as well as the maintenance of the British army in the colonies without their consent, and issued a declaration of the rights due every citizen, including life, liberty, property, assembly and trail by jury” (The History Channel). By the time that they were set to meet again the war had already broke out. Later they added Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson to the delegates and together they all formed the Continental Army, with George Washington as the commander in chief. On July 4th, 1776, the men drafted and signed the Declaration of Independence and two years later the French openly joined the war, thus helping the Americans to win the war and their Independence.
November 2004, after a presidential election in Ukraine many learned something about the votes that was supposed to be kept secret. 85,000 local officials changed 2.8 million votes to help the State’s candidate Yanukovych in the 2nd round of balloting. After realizing that the ballots were tampered with the other runner in the election, “Yushchenko called citizens to join him at Maidan, Kyiv’s Independence Square, to express their outrage”( Vila, Susannah). Two pro-democracy groups, Pora and Maidan joined together to start spreading the word. They first started out on the internet and later moved to text messaging people, since the country had very little internet users. The media also helped in sharing the information, people were encouraged to come out and protest. These protest were named the Orange Revolution and it lasted a week and a half. Thanks to the use of test messages , the protesters all took shifts in the Square, there was even tents set up for people to sleep in. The pro-democracy groups both worked every hard to make sure the protest stayed nonviolent, as it easily could have become violent. The demonstration spread to other cities and after 17 days new elections gave Yushchenko the win for presidency.
