911/Wednesday Evening Group Assignment Task 3:'Assignment and Record Keeping' Part A: State the different assessment methods available and explain the ones you would use for your subject area, including reference to initial assessment. Harlen(1994), suggested that assessment in education takes place in a wide variety of context and for many different purpose, suggests that ,”A comprehensive definition of assessment includes the processes of gathering, interpreting, recording and use of information about pupil's response to an educational task”(1994:11). Assessment is carried out to know if students are able to remember what they have learnt. This can take place at any time and place, but the main point for which will are assessing remain the same no matter where or who is assessing. Assessment are perform to know if learning is taking place, achieving the desired objectives for the teacher , government , individuals and the parents and organisation. The different assessment methods available are has follows: Initial Assessment: This usually start before student begins a course/topic/qualification in order to be sure they are on the right track. To determine the learner's starting point for the particular topic. For example, If am teaching Physical Education it will be useful for me to know if my learners have the idea what sport and fitness is all about or seen people taking part in physical activities or if they have in one way or the other taken part in any form of physical activities. Initial assessment help to asses the literacy and numeracy skill level of the students. It help me to place students on the right course, because most courses/qualifications have entry requirements and if I place them on the wrong course they will be unable to achieve the desire learning outcome. Initial assessment provide information needed to plan individual's learning and improve their chance of learning effectively. Diagnostic Assessment: Determine the level pupil are presently working. Identify pupils who are working below the prescribed level so that they can provide the necessary support for them. Judging on how pupil are performing against a particular sets of criteria. Finding the learner's skills strength and weaknesses and it is done by the teacher. Formative Assessment: This is on going opinion made about pupils work in order to help them progress and this can take the form of observation of practical activities or group exercises during sessions, coursework to form a final portfolio of achievement. This help to inform the teacher the next planning and teaching as well as recording individual progress. Formative assessment also give room to pupils to assess themselves and each other. Summation Assessment: This are done at the end of a term or topic. It can take the form of half termly and end of the year test. The records are pass to the teacher, parents as records of achievements. The other assessment methods are: Observation:A situation where student demonstrate a particular task or performance while the teacher observed to determine how well they are doing and to be able to identify if they are making mistakes. Written Assessment: Some task are written for the learners to take home to do and to return at specific time, and this written task can be given for specific length of words. They can be inform of essay, discussion type,or short answer questions and multiple choice question. Verbal/Oral Assessment/Question:This method of assessment are done verbally where the teacher asked the students questions verbally and the students in turn answer the question verbally. The questions asked should be directed to everyone not just the keen one in the lesson otherwise the quite one will not have the chance of answering the question. Self Assessment: teacher asked pupil to write a reflection on what has been learnt. The teacher in turn uses this to know if what he or she taught has been achieved, and to know if adjustment need to be make. Examination:This are done at the end of the term, usually written or practical. Pupil's are not allow to talk while the exam is on, the exam can be essay type or multiple choice, pupil are not to see the exam papers before it is conducted. Always in a strict environment, supervised by an adult usually called an invigilator. Examinations can be open book were the pupil are given the opportunity to have their learning aids with them while taking the exam,take home exam, the pupil take the exam home to work in their own space, revealed exam, where the exam will be real to the pupil sometime before the real exam and the unseen exam where the exam are not seen before conducted. Testing: Perform at the end of a topic, testing can be skills where pupil are test on issue which they are not familiar with, the do this by using skills and techniques. Computer based Assessment: This type of assessment are done on-line and marked automatically by specialist computer program and give instant result. Peer Assessment:Where pupil are allow to assess each others. I will use the observation and questioning methods due to my subject area which is physical education, often task are demonstrated by me, for example to demonstrate the skill of volley in a volleyball game, the pupils in turn demonstrate the skill with out me correcting them, observing the task and able to identify their mistakes prior to what I have taught them or knowledge. Questioning pupils verbally on the activity demonstrated, to explain the position of my body when the ball is been delivered and level of my eyes, the pupil then answer the question verbally in their ability and I will then correct them if they are unable to explain to my satisfaction. And this will make me to know if the previous explanation needs to be repeated. State the records you would complete for the tracking of assessment and explain why these are needed. Records are documented informations of pupils achievements. The records I will complete for the tracking of assessment are has follows: Observation Records: Situations where pupil's are observed I will record in writing what I can see and when the task is performed, signed and dated, include pupil's and the teacher's comments and it help to show evidence to learners portfolios when assessment are carried out. Individual Education Plan(IEP'S): I will set up an individual education plan to help the parents and the school identify the pupil's needs and areas of difficulty. This will help me to identify where pupil's needs help through the advise given by specialist. Performance Management:I will now assess myself if am performing and delivering my duties as the classroom teacher, focus on health, what they have done and how to improve and why certain task are done. Checking pupils progress, rise pupils achievement to national level, In order for me to identify and rectify poor performance. I will checking on courses to develop me professionally. Individual Pupil Targets: I will continue review throughout the year with specific focus, stating the expected target for each pupil and stating the expected progress for the academic year. This will be share by the pupil and the parents. It allow me to plan and monitor the pupil's development and progress. Whole Class Targets: Based upon the target set at the beginning of the term on the expected progress, I will assess pupils at the end of the term to know if the target had been achieve. This will help me to raise standard.
