Diamond comes from the ancient Greek’s term unbreakable which is “a pure or nearly pure, extremely hard form of carbon, naturally crystallized in the isometric system.” The first few diamonds where said to be found in India almost 6,000 years ago. Nowadays you can find diamond mining almost all over the world from North America to Asia and even Australia. You could even find Diamond mining in the ocean. There are several ways to mine for diamonds a few are Artisanal Mining, Hard Rock Mining, Marine Mining, Open Pit Mining, and Placer Mining. The most over seen and over used technique of mining is the Artisanal Mining. Artisanal Mining is basically a small scale mining which involves nothing more then digging through dirt, mud or gravel riverbanks with anything that you have to catch these gemstones with. For example shovels, hands, and/or sleeves whatever catches is used as a tool. This is the non-mechanized mining that is usually used in poorer countries throughout the world. Usually Blood diamonds are brought and sold around the world through this mining method.
In today’s society when people say precious gems and metal the main thing that comes to mind are gold, silver, and diamonds. “Diamonds are formed from carbon crystallized by extreme pressures deep within the Earth's mantle. Interestingly, they are also sometimes found at the site of a meteor impact. The conditions that forge diamonds over long periods of time underground also occur in the instant of impact between Earth and meteor. With technology advancement, scientists have also been able to create diamonds synthetically.” That does not make them all rare. In fact diamonds are not rare at all the De Beers Cartel would prefer you did not know this information about diamonds. As a matter of fact the annual world production of gem-quality diamonds exceeds sixty million carats. So the next time you think about shelling out a few thousand dollars for an engagement ring think again about what you’re really buying. The media has made these gems highly demanding creating a boost in price.
The main diamond you should be looking for if you want rare and precious should be strongly colored diamonds, which are scarce around the world. These colored diamonds are called Fancies. About one carat out of every 10,000 sold diamonds are Fancies. The shades of the Fancies consist of yellow, green, blue, orange, brown or “champagne”, purple, grey, black, milky white, pink, and red. Red Fancies is by far one of the rarest precious diamonds to be found. There is roughly around thirty five red diamonds found around the world among the largest found is the “Moussaieff Red” also formally know as “Red Shield”.
The Moussaieff weighing at about 5.11 carats although it is not the largest of diamonds, it is the rarest for its color. The red diamond was first found by a Brazilian farmer in the 1990s and it weighed 13.9 roughly carats. The William Goldberg Diamond Corporation, known for its famous stones like the “Premier Rose” and the “Guinea Star”, bought and cut this diamond. The triangular brilliant cut was also called a trillion or a trilliant cut. For a while this diamond was called the Red shield. Around 2001 or 2002 Moussaeiff Jewellers Limited purchased the diamond and renamed it the Moussaeiff Diamond. The firm has no websites but is famous for its multi-million dollar pieces of gems and jewelry in the US and elsewhere. The diamond then traveled to the Smithsonian Museum where it was an exhibit in 2003 in The Splendor of Diamonds. It lasted at the Museum from June 27, 2003 till September 30th, 2003. By far this is the diamond any girls dream would be. After all a diamond is a girl’s best friend.
