Attack every problem with enthusiasm,
Since your survival is depended on it.”
For an energetic person it is very easy to cross the vast ocean, even the summit of MT Everest becomes smaller in front of him. To gain his goal he has to face a lot of problems but in the end his hard work brings success in his life. There are many people in the history who had proved this that hard work is the key to success. One of such person was Dhundiraj Govind Phalke whose hard work & exertion gave birth to cinema in India.
This all began from his childhood. His father was a Sanskrit scholar. He joined Sir J.J. School of art and after passing it he studied sculpture, engineering, drawing, painting and photography. He began his career with small town photographer. But due to rumors like photography capture the live of those persons, ruined this profession. `Without job it was very difficult for him to take care of his family. He had to struggle to earn some money. Them he studied magical tricks but it also did not brought any good result. One day, he while he was walking, he saw a small theatre where films were shown. He entered the room and was very surprised to see that film. That was the turning point of his life. Now he was interested in photo screening. Due to his curiosity, he began gathering information about how the films were made. And he found that these were nothing but the moving photos. This gave the spark of making a film in his mind.
He gathered some photos and started doing experiments on it. He engaged himself so much that he forgot day & night. Due to the scarcity of money he sold many things. His eyes went weak. Every person said that he is mad, stupid and nonsense. But it never deflected his mind. On the other hand, his family supported him very much. His wife Saraswati and two children Babaray and Mahadev supported him on the every step of his life. After this he thought to go London to get some more knowledge on film screening. While going to London, he said his friend not to send any letter carrying bad news for him because he didn’t wanted any such thing which will deflect his mind.
As we know that
“God helps those who help themselves.”
In London he got a new friend Abdullah who taught him the lifestyle of London, and many more things. H met a person who was a film producer in London. There he learnt about the cameras, reels, photography, making the reels and then releasing the film on screen. There he worked as an assistant and learnt many more things. Then he bought camera, its stand, reels, chemicals and many more things. After that he came back to India. He received a gift as daughter named Mandakani.
In the beginning he made a very small film showing the growth of a pea plant. In that experiment he taught his family how to work with the cameras. That experiment was successful and every person was very impressed with his job.
Then he began in directing his first film. He took a small story based on Raja Harishchandra. He gave add for actors, carpenters, painters, cook etc. Suddenly he calculated that it would need a lot of investment of money. And for this, his wile sold her jewelries. At the last, he started making his first film named “Raja Harishchandra”. It was very difficult for him to manage all the things because he was the producer and director. He had made dialogues, wrote the script and did many more things. Finding it very difficult to do these things lonely, people suggested him to share his problems with someone. So he called his old friend named Trymbak. He was also interested in the same thing and he had much knowledge about these things. Many problems rose, making it difficult for him but being a strong person he destroyed that problem. Especially finding a women character because in those days no one used to sent women on job. He was a very happy person. He never became disappointed with anything. He also encouraged his crew members. In the end they successfully made the first Indian film.
It was first shown publicly on May 3, 1913 at Bombay's Coronation Cinema effectively marking the beginning of the Indian film industry. This was a super hit film. For the first one month the theatre was house full. Then it was also released on other theatres and across the seven oceans also. In London also, his film was super hit. It was liked by many people. His friends offered him a deal and said that he can become a rich person it he accepted it. But he refused it saying that he wants to establish a film industry in India.
Now known as India's first full-length feature, he made 95 movies and 26 short films in his career span of 19 years, till 1937, including his most noted works, Mohini Bhasmasur (1913),Satyavan Savitri (1914), Lanka Dahan (1917), Shri Krishna Janam (1918) and Kaliya Mardan (1919)..
