ELP 2013-2 Leadership Book Review # 1 |BOOK TITLE |The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People | |AUTHOR | Stephen R. Covey | |PUBLISHER |Simon Schuster | |PUBLICATION DATE |1989 | |PARTICIPANT NAME |Annette Mesa-Fields |TEAM # |12 | MAJOR MANAGEMENT CONCEPTS DISCUSSED The major management concepts discussed in this book as defined by the Leadership Effective Inventory (LEI) competencies, include: Four levels of leadership the 7 habits apply to all four levels of leadership (personal, interpersonal, managerial, and organizational) you create trust on an interpersonal level and improve relationships. As trust is built you can confidently empower intervals and groups within the organization to produce desired results with empowered individuals, the empowered individuals the organization can align its systems and structure better with the corporate mission and with strategy to meet stake holder’s needs. Alignment then, contributes to greater empowerment and highest trust the 7 habits are: 1. Be Proactive 2. Begin With The End In Mind 3. Put First Thing First 4. Think Win- Win 5. Seek first To Understand 6. Synergize 7. Sharpen The Saw BOOK SUMMARY The book presents 7 habits that are necessary to be an effective Leadership the major concepts discussed is: Habit 1 Be Proactive, We are free to trust the spade between stimulus and response to make choices that best reflect our values: Despite past choices and impact of others, choices and negative behaviors, we are free to continue making choices based on our values. Reactive people do not acknowledge the space between stimulus and response. They make choices based on moods, feeling and circumstances. Reactive language focuses on our Circle of Concern. Proactive language focused on our Circle of concern. Proactive language focused on our Circle of Influences. Relationships are built by action before emotion we can choose to replace negative behaviors with positive ones instead of transmitting the negative behaviors to others. Habit 2 begin with the End in Mind is the first (oriental) creation. Begin with the End in Mind is the habit of personal leadership. We can rescript ineffective thoughts and behavior with effective ones. Each of us has a “center” that guides our decisions and motivates us to act. Of all the possible centers, only a principle center secures guides and empowers. A personal mission statement can be powerful tool in providing direction and meaning to life. Roles and goals give meaning and order to life. Habit 3: Put First Thing first the private victory helps us spend more time in Quadrant 11. There is IV w Quadrant which is separated in two sections first section is Urgent: Quadrant I Crises, Pressing problems, Deadlines-driven project, meeting, preparations and Quadrant III interruptions, some telephone calls, some mail. Some reports some meetings, man proximate, pressing matters, many popular activates and in not urgent section consist of Quadrant II Preparation, prevention, values qualification, planning relationship building, True re-creation empowerment. Quadrant IV Trivia, busywork, some telephone, time waster, “escape” activities irrelevant mail, excessive TV. Quadrant III and IV are categorized as not important and quadrant I and II are categorized as important. The best use of our time focuses on the quadrants that emphasize importance (Quadrants I and II) Building relationships, planning and preparation are Quadrant II PC activities. All activities can be classified by importance and urgency, and can fit into one of the four quadrants on the Team Management Matrix. The best use of our time focuses on the quadrants that emphasize importance (Quadrants I and II) of these two quadrants, our primary focus should be in quadrant II. Involve a six-step process that helps us act on the basis of importance to organize and execute around priorities. Habit 4: think Win-Win: There are 4 different types of characters win lose, win-win loses-lose win. Win-lose thinking promote unhealthy comparisons and competition. Win-Win is a commitment that allows everyone to win. Think win-win is a frame of mind and heart that constantly seeks mutual benefit in all human interactions. Win-win means everyone wins because agreements solutions and mutually beneficial and satisfying-all parties feel good about the decision and fell committed to the action plan. I always heard this phase from one of my friends from work. I really did not get the concept of the meanining until I read this book, how to listen more and stay in communication with other people how they will search for a solution, that will make them happy and satisfy others, really sunk in for me. Lose-Win people who choose to lose and let others win show high consideration of others, but lack the courage to express and act on their feeling and beliefs. They are easily intimidated and borrow strength from acceptance and popularity. Lose-Lose people who have lose-lose are low on courage and consideration. They envy and criticize others. They put themselves and others down. People with a win-win character possess integrity, maturity, and abundance mentally. Habit 5: Seek first to understand then to be understood. To properly diagnose a persons, condition, situation, or problem. We must first practice empathic listening. People listen at different levels, listening empathically is fatal under certain conditions. Autobiographical responses can keep us from understanding. Listening with the eyes, ears, and heat will help understand feeling, meaning and content. Empathy is a deep understanding of another person. The second half of the skill creating understating is seeking to be understood. This habit is a challenge, the challenges of communication is sometime difficult. We have barriers to communication, such as closed minded, not being understood, not listening, not paying attention and reactive attitude. There are different levels of listening such as ignoring, pretend listening, and selective listening, attentive listening and empathic listening. What I have also learned is that to listen with empathy we must listen in silence. Habit 6: Synergize the process of synergizing. Valuing the differences, creating the third alternative and the perspective of Humility Synergy means that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. When two or more people work together to understand something, they can create a phenomenon called “synergy”. The way to create synergy is to create an environment that supports it. The elements of that climate are a win-win attitude, seeking first to understand and believing in our ability to find a third alternative relationships that join people of different abilities and styles of thinking are opportunities for synergy. The first step in taking advantage of different is to respect them and appreciate the prejudging can keep us from appreciating differences. Habit 7; Sharpen the Saw: Four dimensions of renewal, personal production capability, the upward spiral, and principle centered living. Sharpen the saw maintaining and improving the things that help us accomplish our work and other desires. To sharpen the saw, make gradual changes from day to day regular exercise, study, and practice will improve the mind, body, and spirit. The spiritual dimension is ours source of meaning and purpose. The social dimension gives us the opportunity for victory. DISCUSSION OF THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE BOOK’S CONCEPTS TO MY WORK EXPERIENCES AND LEARNINGS I am starting to apply the seven habits at work. I am now taking a situation and trying not to respond so quickly and think about what is going on and my paridien of thinking will shift (change)to how I will handle the situation . Also at home I talked with my husband about emotional bank account in the foundational principles I am using this concept with him. Also I am in the process of writing a mission for myself, from habit 2. I am trying to stay focus and trying to gear myself towards the quadrant II area. It’s not easy switching from one quadrant to another, but with the six step process I will get there. Empathic listening is a skill that I am working on. I also liked the fact Stephen Covey touch on our spiritual dimension. RECOMMENDATION FOR INCLUDING THIS BOOK ON NEXT YEAR’S MANAGEMENT READING LIST I highly recommend this book to stay on the reading list, this book teaches a lot of self-improvement and everyone can use self-improvement. We can always build on sharpening the saw
