Creating a career plan for the future is important, knowing where you are, where you want to be, and how to achieve goals will help to ensure success and fulfilling the path to success easier. Defining specific goals and objectives will not only generate success in achieving career goals but also help ensure that what you do makes you happy. Along the path the success there will be opportunities for growth, a determined career management method, a need to assess skills and education, job satisfaction attributes, an analysis of the effect of career training programs that may have be encountered, actions that need to be taken to reach goals, and the realization of barriers to reaching goals. Currently I have been working in the hospitality industry at a casino; there are many opportunities to work in multiple different departments. My focus since I started working at the casino has been to work in the human resources department; I always have liked the thought of working with new hires and finding new ways to recruit potential applicants. Keeping this career objective in mind, I need to develop a plan to reach my goal within the next 5 years. I enjoy working with people and want to continue working in the hospitality industry. To enjoy what I do I have to interact with people and have continual tasks to complete. My goal in the next 5 years is to be working in the human resources department as a job recruiter. At the casino there are several people in this position working to recruit applicants for several departments and then setting them up for the training process and application through the gaming commission. Because I am currently employed at the casino, slowly working my way up to where I want to be along with continuing my education in the field will help with my success. Classes are offered at the casino to learn how to operate computers better, work within a group better, and obtain effective management skills. Taking these classes not only shows initiative but also shows a willingness to grow, learn, and participate in learning through the casino. Along with portraying a willingness to grow I need to determine a specific method for career management, something specific to me. According to Strategic Initiatives Consulting Group LLC “The method used for Career Management should vary based on the needs and realities of the organization. A cookie cutter approach is not effective in this area because there are many differences among organizations regarding what success looks like and the behaviors and skills necessary to drive the mission.” In the casino industry it is important to the company to have qualified applicants and someone who is willing to keep the companies mission and vision at heart. An applicant with willingness to do their job properly and provide excellent guest service and someone who works toward the companies goals and supports their actions is important. To fill this specification I need to stay on path and learn more about the company’s mission and vision. When positions become available at the casino any internal and external applicants can apply. To give the best information possible I need to determine my education level, skills, training, and experience. Depending on the position specific information is more pertinent than with other applications so it is important to know what I have and then narrow it down concerning the application. Currently I have my associate’s degree in business and will have my bachelor’s degree in business management and hospitality by the end of March 2011. I am skilled in many different areas of work from construction to hospitality; have training in accounting, taxes, training, and computer programs. I have had more than nine years of customer service experience and cash handling, I have also had two years of supervisory experience. Along with this I have had three years experience working in a casino environment. To stay satisfied with my job, I have to work with people and do something that keeps me busy. I prefer to use my customer service experience and education to the fullest extent, which also helps make me feel satisfied with my work. There are actions that can be taken to help with my success and barriers that can keep me from being successful. The first action I can take is making sure I complete all of the classes offered at the casino relating to career development, customer service, and management jobs. Taking these classes can tone the skills I already have as well as give me new skills to work on. These career training programs are in place to help people looking for a career at the casino understand what the expectations are and the best way they can be successful. A second step can be to maintain above expected attendance and evaluation records, both can hinder the ability to change jobs. The third step is to become more involved with casino history and tribal affairs, the casino is founded by tribal office and understanding and supporting these practices will help to further my career. One of the most prominent barriers to achieving my goals is tribal preference for positions, because I am not a tribal member if someone who is tribal qualifies for the same position that person will be selected first. Creating this plan will not only help me to focus on my goal but also the steps I need to take to get there. My next step is to begin taking classes that the casino offers to increase my knowledge about the casinos specific requirements for management and guest service. After I have completed the classes, I can start looking at jobs that fit my interest, and with my education and skills determined it will be easier to complete the application with the necessary information. Every person is different; they possess different skills, education, learning abilities, wants, and goals. Having a career plan specific to each person is important and works with what they want and are capable of. Looking at all of the information above I now have a specific path to follow to achieve my goals that will work best.
