Developing a Character Mickey At the age of seven, Mickey is very excitable, the first time we see him is when he is hammering the door. He is a very friendly child and is immediately friends with his blood brother Edward. He has many friends and mixes well with anyone who treats him with respect. He is jealous of Sammy because Sammy is older and can do more things than Mickey can. At the age of 14, Mickey has become a little withdrawn, he is very shy around girls especially Linda. He is very conscious about his apperence, which we see when he and Edward meet up again. Edward is the exact opposite of Mickey, he knows what to say around girls and is quiet confident. Mickey wants to go out with Linda but is too embarrassed to ask her out especially when Linda keeps telling him that she loves him. Among the years between 14 and 17 these where the best time of Mickey’s life. He spent most of his time playing with Edward and Linda. By the time Mickey is 18 we began to see a difference in Mickey’s emotions they began to change when he leaves school early and goes into a dead end job that he absolutely hates. This is contrasting with his happiness and has the courage to ask Linda out. This is followed by Linda getting pregnant, due to the lack of income Mickey ask his mum “Mrs Johnson” if they can both stay at her house. This shows that there is a loving relationship between Mrs Johnson and Mickey. The happiness of the wedding has gone bad because Mickey has become redundant. He begins his downward spiral of depression as he look for another job. This is a contrast between Mickey’s emotional states compared to how he had been when he was seven. Another example is shown when Mickey and Edward meet at Christmas. Edward has stayed the same while Mickey has just become jobless, grown up, matured and seen what the world is really like. He is jealous of what Edward has achieved; Edward talks about his mates in university and how much fun he is having. This sense of responsibly means that he accidently agrees to go on the robbery with Sammy. Mickey is devastated when Sammy shoots someone with the gun. Mickey is thrown into a jail and is in emotional state, which resolves by taking anti-depressant drugs but comes addicted to them. He comes out of jail around the age of 21 for good behaviour. when he comes out he is depressed, he wants to disappear and wants to be invisible so no one can talk to him. Mickey loves Linda so much that he stopped using the pills this how strong love can be. When he discovers that Edward and Linda are having a affair, he is in shock, he is furious, in blind rage and wants to KILL Edward! When he come fronts Edward his lack of self on stream, he dough’s that the child is even his and could be Edwards. Finally, when e discovers that Edward was given away as a baby, he wishes he had been Edward and that could have been given away. So he dies realising that Edward had it all while he has nothing. Historical events/relationships Mickey was the baby that was not chosen, so he had to live the rough way while Edward was chosen and lived a rich and glorious life. The two most important people in his is Linda and his mom Mrs. Johnson. Mickey stomachs the strength to ask Linda therefore getting married. When Mickey finds out about the affair between Linda and Edward he goes in a blind rages and wants t kill Edward, this is followed by him dying with Edward. Mickey becomes depressed because he is redundant and cannot seem to find a job to support his family. Because of Sammy Mickey gets thrown in jail and becomes addicted to anti-depressant pills. Achievements When Mickey is seven he wants to be 8 and get the respect of Sammy. When he is 14, he gets the courage to ask Linda out also stay friend with Edward and Linda forever. When he is 18, he wants to have a job to support this family and have enough money left over to have a drink with this friends but this doesn’t happen Later he wants to achieve to get off the drugs. At the end of the play Mickey want to kill Edwards and when he find out that Edward was picked instead of him he want to be him Purpose The function of this play is to show the differences between the classes. William Russell the playwright believes that the class that you came from determines who you are and how successful you will be.
