I would like to take some time to describe the new types of art, music, and entertainment that have become popular during this time period. It is 1933 and Germany continues to achieve success under the Weimer Republic. During this age of prosperity in Germany, many new types of art, music, and architecture have become popular. In art, I looked at pictures that depicted expressionism, cubism, and Dadaism. I looked at “Stormtroops Advancing Under Gas” by Otto Dix in 1924. This picture is an example of expressionism and it represents the tragedies and terribleness from the Great War. The painting is filled with pain and suffering of the German soldiers that perished in the war. Another painting I have viewed is “Three Musicians” by Pablo Picasso. The painting was painted in 1921 and is painted in a cubism style. Cubism was a style of art that portrayed the disarray and confusion that immediately followed the Great War. Figures were formed abstractly as a way of showing how abstract and unpredictable our lives would be following the war. I also viewed a painting entitled “Republican Automatons” which was painted by George Grosz in 1920. This painting was done in the Dadaism style and it depicts how German people robotically listened to their government and agreed to the war. Since Dadaism was an anti-war style of painting, this artist was against Germany fighting in the Great War. All of the current styles of art are depressing and represent post-war feeling. I think that art will become more lively and optimistic as we continue to prosper. In architecture, a new idea known as functionalism is being used. Functionalism emphasizes efficiency and clean lines. The Bauhaus school in Germany is a leader in functionalism and all architecture. This type of architecture is also spreading to The United States of America, mostly in the city of Chicago. Modern music is similar to art in its use of expressionism and emotion. Also, some composers are following cubism’s example by abandoning traditional harmony in their works. New types of entertainment are also being invented during this age of prosperity. These include the new radios and movies. Radios are being used to broadcast speech and music to thousands of people throughout Germany. One man on our block owns a radio and he has the entire block over weekly to listen to the Chancellor speak to the German people. Movies are a type of entertainment in which pictures are shown so quickly that it appears they are moving with fluent motion. Watching movies are a main form of entertainment for the masses and movie stars make people want to go watch movies. Also, some movies are used to teach people about important issues such as our government and what is going on in the world. All of these new types of amusement provide ways for people to spend time and become more knowledgeable about the world we live in. As our prosperity continues, hopefully new inventions and ideas will help Germany to continue to grow stronger
