TA1: Describe what your role, responsibilities and boundaries would be in terms of teaching and learning cycle.
Initially the teachers’ role and responsibilities would involve identifying the needs of the learners. This would be done by assessing previous experiences and knowledge. Examining records from previous educational establishments, teachers and assessment records and interviewing the learner to calculate previous education and ability would provide a valuable insight into prior knowledge and experience. When ascertaining what the learners need to learn and why this is important, considerations would include whether the aim was to gain a specific qualification or to obtain knowledge in a subject, alongside the learners own desires and interests.
The teacher would then have the responsibility to plan long, medium and short term learning objectives. These must be S.M.A.R.T. (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time based) and meet the needs of the learners with appropriate content, teaching and learning activities.
Content might be linked to the learners interests or/and strengths, making learning more relevant and motivating. Special needs would have to be taken in to consideration e.g. visual, auditory etc. as well as ensuring that all learning styles were addressed. Planning activities to meet the different types of learners – V.A.K. (visual, auditory, kinaesthetic) is an important role of the teacher.
Learning activities might include both active and passive and ICT could be included. Resources’ must be appropriate, adequate and accessible but cost would have to be a consideration and might be a limiting boundary. When deciding on all of this, the teacher would have the responsibility to consider the health and safety of the learners, assessing and planning to minimise risks.
When delivering teaching and assessing learning, the teachers’ role and responsibility is to communicate effectively to the whole class, individually or in groups. Delivery of lessons are important with clear instructions both auditory and visual. Teacher’s need to maintain eye contact and a positive posture as this can have impact on the motivation and interest of the learners. The teacher has the responsibility to have all resources prepared and at hand. Ground rules and boundaries for behaviour and work must be set, the teacher demonstrating expectations through their own behaviour as mutual respect is important. Delivery would need to be differentiated however to meet individual learning needs and it is the teachers responsibility to adapt the lesson appropriately.
Success as to whether learning objectives are met will then help learner and teacher identify the next stage in the learning cycle. There are numerous methods to acquire this information. It could be with the whole class, individually, self assessment or self reflection with assessments being formal or informal. The teachers’ role will include recording these findings in a reliable, systematic way. They could be formative, as the course progresses or summative, at the conclusion. Feedback, whether it is oral or written, given by the teacher, should be fair and constructive. Explaining, advising and helping the learner identify success and the next stage of their education is the teacher’s responsibility
Continual reflection as to the success of teaching is vital. Evaluation is an important tool in education. It is an ongoing process and could take the form of written or verbal, what worked and what could be done better needs to be considered. Response from learners are helpful, a feedback form and various other methods being deployed when appropriate. It is the teacher’s role and responsibility to consult, reflect and adapt so that every learner succeeds and can move onto the next stage in their education.
