Demonstrative Communication
Communication can be defined as the process of sending and receiving messages. Communication involves exchanging ideas, thoughts and opinions; there are countless ways of communicate your message some of which may require doing it verbally or others of which do not require any conversation; most of the communication that we do is non-verbal. No-verbal communication can be a written note or text message, or a picture on a billboard, or as simple as a face gesture. Demonstrative communication can be related to non-verbal communication. More than 50% of all communication is non-verbal and there for considered demonstrative communication. Demonstrative communication can be broken in three major groups, which would be body, physiology, and non-verbal, each one of these categories can be broken down into more sub categories.
One first category of demonstrative communication is body, which refers to the senders or the receiver’s actual body. One of the sub categories that go in the body is physical space, and physical space refers, the actual environment in which the sender of the message chooses to send the message. Bits and pieces like furniture, music, lighting conditions, and colors, can all affect the way the message is received, for example, you would not ask your girlfriend to marry you in the middle of funeral while there is a large thunderstorm outside and there playing a sad song that sings about letting go. No matter how exiting or happy it might be, the message will be received inappropriately because of the setting in which it was sent out. Another important aspect of body is what goes over it, clothing and appearance is the next sub category. Clothing and appearance can be considered the most important because which out notice the clothing that a person wearing sends out the first impression to other people. A great case in point would be when people go interview for a job. If the applicant is applying for a management, and the applicant shows up to the interview in flip-flops and torn pants, this look will imminently send the wrong message to the person who is interviewing the person. In addition, locomotion will also send a good or bad impression to other people around you. Locomotion is the last sub category for body, and it refer to what your actual body is doing such as if your arms are crossed, or if your hands are in your pockets, or if the person is moving around. All of this thing can send out bad messages as crossing your arms sends the person that is talking the message that you are not listening or disagree with what they are saying. Additionally, if the sender or receiver of the message keeps moving around, it could send a message that they want to leave the conversation, and the message could interpreted as rude.
Physiology is the next major category that defines demonstrative communication and once more this is broken down in to three sub categories, which are posture, gesture and facial expressions. Posture is one of those things that hardly anyone thinks about, but actually, it is one of the fist things that your body responds too. Like a prime example would be if you ask an employee just worked an eight hour shift to stay and double up and work another five hours. The employees posture will change completely their shoulders will drop, their knees will bend a little, all this may be traits that the receiver of the message may not be aware of but the sender of the message can clearly see and translate. Facial expressions can almost tell the any person whether you are the sender of the message or the receiver that entire person needs to know. Many facial expressions are voluntary meaning that we can control them but there are few insistences where we cannot control these expressions and they end up sending a loud message that we might have wanted to keep a secret. All people look for these expressions since facial expressions are likely the easiest to decode. Gestures not only send a message with the person having to speak a single world, one such gesture would be when you wave hi at someone. However, another big part of gestures is that they can actually amplify what a speaker or sender of a message is saying. Hitler can best demonstrate this type of amplification when he would give speeches to his troops; he would move his arms and strike the podium. As well as throwing his arm out in the air at an angle to show his loyalty to his troops, this has lead scholars’ to conclude that Hitler was a great speaker and message sender.
On average, what the words that we speak have little or no effect on without demonstrative communication or non-verbal communication. Without gestures to amplify a person’s words or without any facial expressions world can be a dull place. Not to mention the value of delivering the message and setting the atmosphere to do so, with the right lighting and music. When all of this tools are set in place it makes delivering a message that easier and helps drive the point across in a smoother way.
