Demonstrative Communication By: Michael S Pepper BCOM/275 12/12/2011 Instructor: R. Garth Ferrell Demonstrative communication is the verbal, nonverbal, written or unwritten ways that human beings use to communicate with each other, especially in a business environment. It can be effective to the issue or agenda for the future, but if not used properly to the type of communication needed to the sender or receiver the message or discussion may be ineffective depending on distractions and on how people approach one another when deciding to communicate, how we choose to communicate will justify whether the outcome could be positive or negative in the communication with each other, if face-to-face or through a telecommunication device, the tone of voice and body language in junction with the verbal or nonverbal communication will either have an effective or ineffective response during communication.“Demonstrative communication includes nonverbal and unwritten communication and involves such things as facial expressions, tone of voice, and body language” (University of Phoenix, 2011, Course Syllabus). Nonverbal or written is the action of facial expressions, body language, etc. that we use because of the reaction to the discussion when we communicate nonverbally or during a presentation. The verbal or written would be the tone of our voice, along with the body language and the words spoken or written in this paper. This paper will be describing how we as individual people communicate with or without words or messages. First, demonstrative communication involves listening and responding, Example: the reason that it enhances the verbal skills we need to communicate, if say I am giving a presentation I need to be aware of the audience and their interest in the presentation, listening is also receiving the nonverbal messages, the audience may lose interest if I use to much body language to present the presentation so therefore the message is no longer sent. When an individual starts a discussion and sends a message to the receiver their called a sender, this is the person who speaks to the receiver which in turn listens and responds with feedback, in the process of sending a message both the receiver and sender are transceivers, due to the body language, tone of voice and facial expressions, even when others around are speaking you still receive or send feedback. When in discussion while communicating, people read the tone of voice and body language from the sender, As individuals in our different cultures we all have this in common, we simultaneously send and receive messages and information all the time; our brains do not stop thinking. So as a sender, the message is sent encoded as a message to the receiver, the receiver will then decode the message, decoding means the receiver will understand by the tone in the voice, body language, facial expressions and verbal/written message of the sender, if the communication is not followed by the correct channels then the feedback will be negative and the communication could lead to misunderstanding. If when communicating and the sender or receiver doesn’t follow the correct channel of communication between the sender and receiver it could cause ineffectiveness to the point of communicating the message. If someone is smiling, waving or wearing their clothes in a certain style, their performing some kind of a demonstrative communication. Demonstrative Communication is a positive and effective learning through technology to better communicate with other individuals or groups without confrontation and misunderstanding whether you’re the sender or the receiver, demonstrative communication is a critical learning tool, with this technology people can learn how to read a message clearer without confusion and misunderstanding simply by the tone in their voice and the body language the sender is showing whether it be arm movements or simply in a hurry, here’s an example, when someone says “pick that up!”, as the sender says this he/she might be walking by not stopping and the tone sounding stressed and not aggressive, well the receiver might take it offensive and misunderstand the actual meaning, demonstration communication is an important tool used every day, it has brought less misunderstandings and confusion to communication. There are several ways in which someone can use demonstration communication to their advantage, for example a nonverbal facial expression even if it’s as simple as a smile or a worried facial expression, the effectiveness and positive part of demonstration communication is learning it so that when someone speaks, it’s not took as a misunderstanding. Here’s a couple examples, as we walk into the store we see a man behind the counter, his posture is strait and strong he has a smile he greets you, he’s very well dressed for the job, this individual is seen to be nice, helpful and motivated to come to work and assist the customers with respect. Now let’s say u walk into a store and there’s a man behind the counter except he’s slouching and he’s wearing dirty clothes, and u ask him where to find something on the shelf and he says just look over there if it’s not there then I don’t know what to tell you and walks away as though you walked out of the store, this would be ineffective and negative demonstration communication. This can take place anywhere include home and work. One of the causes for ineffective demonstration communication is distractions whether in a work place or something simple as a TV in the home, distractions can cause interference in the sending and receiving of communication and messages, if the receiver is distracted then they may misunderstand the message that was sent from the individual sending the message, if the sender is distracted then the message may not be presented correctly which creates confusion because they may have meant to say something and got distracted thus leaving out part of the message creating misunderstanding. Conclusion In conclusion I have written about demonstration communication describing nonverbal, verbal, written and unwritten communication as I have expressed the expressions of the nonverbal and verbal communication as a few are facial expressions, body language and the tone of the voice of the sender or receiver as well as the verbal words. I have made examples of how the effectiveness/ineffectiveness as I have also explained the positives and negatives for both the sender and the receiver, I have provided in the writing as to how demonstrative communication utilizes listening and responding.
