Demonstrative Communication
Communication is a way to transmit feelings or thoughts; it is a process of transferring information between a sender and a receiver. Communication is way to send or receive messages. There is several ways to communicate, many people communicate through verbal and nonverbal communication. Communication can also be writing or visual. Verbal communication is used to express feelings or thoughts through speaking or writing were as nonverbal communication is through visual such as body language or facial expressions.
Demonstrative communication includes nonverbal communication and unwritten communication. A sender can nonverbally send a positive message to a receiver through a facial expression such as a smile or a wink or by frowning or scowling can send a message of disappointment or anger.
Unwritten communication can be through visually seeing someone or something and making an assumption from what was seen and how it was perceived. For example the other day our office was interviewing people for a new medical assistant two of the applicants were dressed neatly and professionally, the girls looked eager and had big smiles on their faces. These two girls sent a positive message to us. As the receiver we assumed they were better candidates. We had a more positive view of both of them. The other two girls they sent a different unwritten communication to us. One of the girls had sat with her arms crossed over her chest and had a very unhappy look on her face. The other girl had an excited look on her face with a big smile but had pinkish hair. All of us in the office judged these two girls as candidates we would not be interested in based on their nonverbal communication. After the interviewing and verbally communicating with these candidates, we choose the girl with the pinkish hair. After talking to her we learned that she had a wonderful personality. We decided she was exactly what we were looking for and that she would fit in perfectly. The new girl was hired based on her verbal communication and the positive attitude we received from her.
Recently I went on a job interview myself. In the interview I was receiver and a sender of verbal and nonverbal communication. Because I am the nervous type and haven’t been on many job interviews in my lifetime and have only held a few jobs in my life I was deathly afraid of the communication I would send to the receivers based on my nonverbal communication. I as the sender made sure that I would send both positive unwritten and nonverbal communication based on the way I presented myself, making sure I was dressed appropriately and had a smile on my face at all times. Knowing that the way I sat and presented myself would be very important as a sender I wanted the receiver to see that I was confident and sure of myself.
As the sender I tried to say positive things and keep a smile on my face to portray a positive personality throughout the interview. When I did my skill assessment as a sender I made sure I kept my voice in a positive tone and kept a smile on my face at all times. I was hoping the receiver would see that I had a positive personality, knew what I was doing and that I had confidence in my skills. It wasn’t until the interview going before the three interviewers that my nonverbal and verbal communication began to unravel. Two of the receivers had great big smiles on their faces and the way the responded to me gave me a sense of security, based on their nonverbal communication of smiles and nodding of their heads I perceived that the interview was going good. The third interviewer had a scowl on her face and just stared unwaveringly at me; every time I spoke or answered a question she would look at me and write things down on her paper. This interviewer never smiled or acknowledged my answers. I never had a sense of reassurance or approval and as a receiver at that moment I became greatly frightened and nervous. Through her nonverbal communication I could tell that she was going to be the hardest one to get through too. As the sender I sat up straight and kept a big smile on my face hoping the receivers would see that I was confident and sure of myself. The beginning of the interview went great but as the questions kept coming and as I looked from the two smiling interviewers and to the frowning interviewer my confidence began to waver and after several questions and the looks that the frowning interviewer gave me I could no longer be confident and assertive. As a sender I began to fail in my verbal and nonverbal communication skills, by the end of the interview I was no longer sure of my communication skills and to this day I have yet to receive a call, so I am assuming that as a sender I failed in my communication to the interviewers, the receivers.
Demonstrative communication is very important in aspects of life. Reading the assignments I learned how important verbal and nonverbal communication is for everyday use. I use my verbal and nonverbal skills daily at work and at home. Facial expressions, body language and verbal communication are used daily with my job and how my patients and my coworkers perceive me. Had I understood the true importance of verbal and nonverbal communication I may have been a more successful sender and my receivers would have hired me.
