Decisions in Paradise: Part One
Kava, a South Pacific Island, seems like a very challenging place to establish a successful business. Success, however, can be defined in many different ways. For the island of Kava, success is going to mean a jump start to the economy of Kava. Our company, the Dive Shop, will bring in much of what is needed for the island. The opportunity is there for the island and our business to grow together and bring stability to Kava.
Before business begins, there are many issues facing our organization. The first is the local government and the people of Kava. It is important that our organization respect the culture of the island and observe all the demands of their culture. In certain parts of the South Pacific, cultures still worship gods of the sea and it is important to show our respect to the entire marine environment. This is going to be one of the biggest issues facing the organization.
Their culture aside, most islands, including Kava, have strict laws that protect their marine environment (Resture, 2008). The government has recognized the huge resource the surrounding ocean is and wants to ensure its protection. We will have to set-up many meetings with the government and locals to ensure that the ocean and its inhabitants are our first concern.
Another big issue for the island is the influx of tourism to the island. Our goal with opening another Dive Shop and Resort is to bring more tourism to the island. The shop and resort will open up many jobs for the locals and help to bring in money to their economy. This addition of tourists will bring in more traffic and other environmental issues to be discussed with the locals and government. It is our job to have solutions to these issues before we go before the government and locals.
One of the last issues remaining for our business is the amount of resources needed to build our dive shop and resort. We are developing on an island in the middle of the South Pacific and many of our resources will need to be brought in. The island cannot supply enough resources to build this resort and we will need to bring in most of the resources by plane or boat. We will invest as much as possible in the local economy, but much will come from other places.
The success of the company rides solely on the positive solution to these major issues. There are many forces that will come into play in order to make our dream a reality on Kava. The first major force is the people. The people of Kava need to accept the idea of a large dive resort on their island. Many might not be too accepting of the idea of more tourism and people coming to their island. The locals might view an increase in tourism as a way of destroying their land and its resources.
The government is also a huge force in the formulation of the problem. The government ultimately controls whether or not we are able to bring The Dive Shop and Resort to Kava. It is our job to show that we will have a positive impact on their culture and economy. Getting the support of the government will be a huge win and will help to convince the locals that we are going to be a positive part of Kava.
However, there is one force that we do not have any control over and that is the weather. This island is susceptible to many natural disasters. There is always a threat of a tsunami, hurricane, flood, or an outbreak of avian flu. Our contractors and designers will work tirelessly to ensure that we take all precautions when it comes to these disasters. Plus, our research team can look into vaccinations and ways to bring new medicinal supplies to the hospitals and clinics of Kava.
The decisions we make throughout our planning process are going to impact everyone on the island. Bringing more people to Kava will create more traffic for everyone to deal with. The locals will have to get used to more people walking around their towns. The locals of Kava are going to have their daily lives impacted by the new resort.
The merchants of Kava will become much busier as well. This is a very large positive to the people and economy of Kava. The merchants will have to create more of their souvenirs to meet the demands of the tourists. However, the money brought in will help to create more jobs and industry for the locals.
The influx of tourists will also have an impact on all public servants. Police, fire, and rescue will have to step up enforcement. With more people come more accidents and a need for care. Police will have to help enforce local laws and traffic and educate incoming tourists. Fire and rescue will be more active with the tourists and the beaches. Kava will have people coming from all parts of the world that may or may not be familiar with ocean safety.
Lastly, the environment will be the most affected by the increase in tourism. Our business is a dive resort and will have a daily influence on the ocean. We need to do our part to preach ocean safety and awareness. Our impact will be one of preservation and education about their surrounding reefs and the inhabitants. We will only take species that the locals deem appropriate and help to preserve all endangered species.
Opening our dive resort will be a long and arduous process. It will take the full support of the locals and their government. It will, in the long run, have a positive impact on the people and the economy of Kava. Our organization will and has always been one of education and preservation. Adding the South Pacific as a destination for our guests is a huge plus for our company and our industry.
