Death Penalty The death penalty is a much debated topic in our society. There are many points of view some against and some in favor, but it doesn’t seem to get an agreement any time soon. The death penalty is the toughest sanction and the oldest in history. This consists on killing a person that was found guilty of breaking the law, usually of killing someone else. There are thirty five (35) States with the death penalty, which are Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Arizona, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Idaho, Mississippi, Ohio, Texas, California, Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, Utah, Colorado, Indiana, Montana, Oregon, Virginia, Connecticut, Kansas, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Washington, Delaware, Kentucky, Nevada, South Carolina, Wyoming, plus U.S. Government, and U.S. Military. The other fifteen states without the death penalty are, Alaska, Massachusetts, Vermont, Hawaii, Michigan, New York, West Virginia, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Maine, New Jersey, Rhode Island, District of Columbia and New Mexico that become the latest state to outlaw the death penalty effective July 1, 2009. From the year 1994 there was 328 sentences to death penalty and last year dramatically has dropped to 106 death sentences. People that are in favor of the death penalty believe in it because they think is better to terminate someone life for many reasons, one of them being able to eliminate the possibility of the person killing someone else and hurting another person. Also it will show the consequences of doing such a horrible act and will set an example for others to follow. Is another way to protect others people’s life’s and provide security for the citizens since there is a possibility the criminal will do the same thing again. Another issue is the people think is not fair to having to pay to keep all those criminals in jail for their rest of their lives. While they are in jail our tax money goes to provide these criminals with basic needs like food, hygiene health and other important things and others argue that serving a lifetime jail sentence is a worse punishment than death. One major issue is we believe is better to end their lives, which is the proper way of doing in it' In the past they have several types of death sentences like hanging and decapitated. Which way is the most human way to terminate someone’s life, Electric chair or lethal injection' A lethal injection is normally a combination of three drugs: First, sodium thiopental as anesthesia; the second one is pancuronium bromide (PAN-cue-ROW-nee-uhm BROE-mide) as paralyze; and the third one potassium chloride to induce cardiac arrest. Introduce measures were taken when venous access became compromised during administration of lethal chemicals and then Physician confirmed complete cessation of respiration and heartbeat and pronounced inmate dead. In the electric chair, the prisoner is strapped into the chair with leather belts across the chest, thighs, legs, and arms. Two copper electrodes are then attached - one to the leg, a patch of which will have been shaved naked to improve conductivity and the other contained within a head covering to the shaved head. The electrodes are either soaked in brine or treated with gel to increase conductivity and reduce burning. A leather face mask or black face cloth is applied. The prisoner will also be wearing a diaper. The executioner presses a button on the control panel to deliver a first shock of between 1,700 and 2,400 volts, which lasts for between 20 seconds and a minute. The current must be under 6 amps to ensure the body does not cook. Smoke usually comes out of the prisoner's leg and head and then a doctor examine the prisoner if he or she dead. The first shock runs for up to one minute and normally destroys the brain and central nervous system. It also causes complete paralysis due to every muscle in the body contracting and staying contracted whilst the current is flowing. This makes heartbeat and respiration impossible, usually the prisoner has to be unconscious about two hundred and forty (240) seconds. Sixteen states use lethal injection as the sole method of execution. Killing a human being is a violation of human rights. Is an act on vengeance no of justice' The solution is not to kill them but to help the state to educate them morally and socially. The system can find them innocent or guilty, but is the death penalty the correct punishment' Manuel Martinez Coronado was a poor native from Guatemala. He was the first Indian to be convicted and executed by lethal injection. His death was televised on February 10 1998. It took 18 minutes to execute him; his injection took longer than expected. Meanwhile, his family was crying desperately while they contemplated how his loved one was taken away. Later on they discovered that Manuel was innocent. There are a lot of cases where the system has failed. Many innocents have paid the ultimate price. Our system is not flawless. Many countries have stop from using the death penalty. Here in USA is a state decision whatever or not to applied the death penalty. If it was your son, brother, or a family member that was confronted with the death penalty would you be in favor' Each execution leaves more suffering to the families involved and multiplies the pain in society. In my opinion, the death penalty should be abolishing. Everyone should have an opportunity to rehabilitate. Some times humans need time to evaluate the damage done and reevaluate their mistakes. Time in jail could help them become aware of their actions and give them an opportunity to change. In conclusion, there are many pros and cons of the death penalty. All sides have very valid reasons and in some cases make sense. I just think that killing one person for another is not the human solution to this problem. Killing likes and we are not God to decide some one’s fate. Trying to help is always the better way even if the crime committed is against us or one we love. Hate always creates more hate. Love and forgiveness creates peace. That is what this world needs more of. March 5, 2004 American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Death Penalty Information Center October 1999 -Mary Robinson, U.N.
