Abolishment of Death Penalty
Murder has been around since human beings were able to control their physical strength. In the earlier days it was easy for the criminals to commit the crime without getting caught. Therefore the death penalty was passed to threaten the people from committing crimes and execute the criminals in legal ways. This method has been going around for a long time, but more people are against the death penalty solution. Is it really morally right to kill someone under the law' It is only telling the whole wide world that killing can be legal. The capital punishment does not remove the label as a murderer in anyway, so the death penalty is inefficient method as to decreasing and depleting criminal activity. P1
Death penalties are preceded in different ways such as lethal injection, electrocution, lethal gas, hanging, and firing squad. They mostly use the lethal injection to make it a quick and clean death. Not all of the injections go as planned and must be finished with another injection because each person could take the lethal injection differently. The death sentences are given to serious murderers who are a threat to the society. Even though United States is a peace-loving country, it still has the death penalty in many states. It has been a controversial issue that many people were bothered by the capital punishment. There are more abolitionists than who want the death penalty to be part of the law. People who are for the death penalty say that people will fear the final penalty and therefore the murder rate will decline. The victim’s family has somewhat justice and criminals will fear the execution. They even state the Bible into this issue. Does the murder rate really go down' Does the victim’s family get what they want' Does everyone believe in the Bible' These questions should be proven right in order to keep the death penalty. P2
People who believe that death penalty is justifiable can be totally proven wrong with the world statistics. The majority of the world abolished the death sentence in their country and many are still trying to pass the law to vanish it. Edward I. Koch makes big statement like “If we create a society in which injustice is not tolerated, incidents of murder – the most flagrant form of injustice – will diminish” (Koch 57). He is totally mistaken because the statistics show the states with death penalty have a higher murder rate than without it ("Death Penalty"). Well there are proven facts that murder rate are gradually declining in the United States, but among those murders were committed more in pro-death penalty states. So death penalty did not have any influence on the murder rates in the United States, which provides evidence that capital punishment is not actually necessary. Koch also says that the government needs to show power over the citizens, so there will be order and peace (Koch 57). Showing power by sentencing the murderers is hypocritical because there is statistical evidence that states with the death penalty have the higher rate. P3
When a person was death sentenced, it might be true that the opposite family might be justified in a way. But can the death penalty replace the life of their family member' It will definitely differ from cases to family how they will take the punishment. The life of the lost can never be revived or replaced with anything, so by killing the murderer they actually gain nothing. Justification will never be present. Of course the murderer must deal with consequences of his or her actions, but death will not solve anything. It will only start the never ending revenge cycle and eventually end up with another murder. Would it not be better when the murderer can learn and pay a life lesson by spending rest of her or his life in prison' The murderers will have to attend classes where they talk, write, and think about their crimes. They will have to beg for forgiveness to the family for rest of their life. California could save more than hundred million dollars, if they would get rid of the death penalty ("Death Penalty"). Not only California, but many other states could save millions of dollars and spend the money in more important uses, for example education. The taxpayers would be happy to hear that their money is actually being used in good deeds and not to kill someone’s life. This would even start another issue, which the taxpayers are paying to kill a murderer. Will it not make them a murderer too then' Others might counter argue that it is better than paying the life sentenced prisoners, but it is cheaper to keep the prisoners than to kill them ("Death Penalty"). P4
This issue interests even the teenagers, and some say there should be a death penalty for anyone who committed murder. Casey Johnson, who is eighteen years old, “[doesn’t] believe that killers can be rehabilitated, even if they are young” (Johnson 86). Young people are not quite capable of deciding from right or wrong. They are still developing their mind and barely have an understanding of life. Of course it is not acceptable that they killed, but it could have been an accident or out of fear. They must be treated and their parents should take the consequences because parents are responsible for their children. Emma Welch, who is seventeen years old, states “Minors cannot even hold bank account or sign legal contracts without the consent of their adult custodians” (Welch 86). She depicted the reality; minors are not capable of signing anything and must have the adult’s consent, which puts them still as irresponsible children. Teenagers are deeply concerned whether or not the death penalty should be justified. This shows how the future of our world is dealing with the controversial issue.
Religion is also brought into this problem. Even though under the constitution God is mentioned, not everyone believes in God and has other religions they worship. So no one can really say because the Bible says all murderers shall be executed, they cannot follow it. This will only make the death penalty issue bigger and upset the people with other religions. Therefore the Bible should not be mentioned or used to keep the death sentence. P5
People in the United States have been living with the death penalty all these years and why the change now. The overspending of money for the death penalty could be used for other purposes where it is more needed. Because of the death penalty many innocent people were death sentenced, who did not even commit the crime. Is that justifiable for them and their family' Killing a human life is morally wrong because taking someone’s life under the law portraits the legalization of killing. Many people are not aware about the factual statistics and need to be informed. Executions are actually declining ("Capital Punishment Statistics"), which would mean there are not as many serious murders than before. Troy Davis, who was convicted for murdering a police officer, is currently fighting for his life. He should have been death sentenced, but faulty witness information cause to pause his penalty. There was no physical evidence that he killed the officer in any way and the weapon was never found ("Death Penalty"). Nationwide people are trying to help Davis to win the case and set free. There are many people like him in prison, who are innocent. There is no justification for death penalties with all the proven statistics. People will come up with different opinions, but whatever they say it will be nonsense.P6
Instead of killing off criminals after their wrong doings, it would be better if they would at least learn their mistake before they leave this world. Only this way will be justifiable because lethal injections can never imitate the pain that the victims felt when they were murdered. If the law allows killing in itself, the world will never be free of murder. Having the criminals serve a special military force or just keeping them in jail with the classes which was mentioned before should take care of the murder problem. Learning from their mistake and begging forgiveness to the people they harmed should be more justifiable than repeating the death cycle. Murder should vanish once and for all in human life. Since children are the future they should be raised with extra care. P7
It is a truly depressing and degrading fact to the human being because every minute a newborn child opens his or her eyes to the world full of crimes and violence. Children are taught verbally and visually, but most of them catch up the visual picture faster. So the ultimate solution to the violent society would be teaching the children the right proper things rather than letting themselves pick up how the world runs. Most crimes can be prevented by educating each and every person with the right knowledge and attitude. Since most of the criminals are lonely and have some sort of mental illness, talking to them and solving the inner problems will definitely change their attitude and behavior. Everyone should befriend with someone who can be trusted. P8
