Day Of Empire
The thesis that Chua discuses in the book is that for an empire to rise, it has to be tolerance. Tolerance is where one empire accepts different racial, religion and ethnic groups. It also means that everyone should be treated equal. When tolerance reaches the climax, or tipping point, it leads to intolerance, which causes a lot of conflicts, hatred, violence and the fall of empire.
The Archaemenids Empire started when Cyrus led a rebellion against Astyages then taking control over the empire. He later took over Lydian, Median and Babylonian and was the ruler of the largest empire that existed. His son, Cambyses invaded Egypt and continued respecting the local customs and religions like his father when he ruled the empire afterward. Later on, Darius took his place and trained the navy and troops. Xerxes, the next ruler was very intolerance and cruel. He destroyed temples and sanctuaries killing and enslaving in the process. Alexander, the next ruler, built the temples and sanctuaries back that Xerxes destroyed and raised a large army and was very tolerance. The empire later crumbled when Alexander died from a fatal fever and the rebellions acted up.
The Archaemenids Empire was very diverse including many people of different religion and origins. People from different places came and lived together and they interact peacefully and honoring the temples and cults. The military and navy were to protect the empire. The empire was introduced to systems of taxation and tribute and “mastered the art of the fictitious tax cuts” . The Archaemenids consist of many different fruit, plants, exotic animals.
The Rome empire became a hyperpower after the fall of the Achaemenid Empire. It was generously accepting refugees from Italy. It, too, respects the cultural identity of their citizens. Higher offices were opened to all educated men regardless of their race and nationality. Power were limited to women though, they weren't treated the same rights as men did. They were almost “entirely excluded from public life” given very limited rights. Rome had many alliances that helped them when they dealt with enemies. At the end, outraged Germans once loyal to the empire turned against them and rebelled. Rome fell when it had “too much diversity” and it exceeded the limits of Roman tolerance. Also Rome had other rebellions and it just couldn't win.
The Roman Empire made peace treaties that would let them trade freely with Rome but not with each other which made the smaller city-states become economically dependent on Rome while their alliance would also provide Rome with their troops. Rome had many merchant ships arriving and conveying every goods common. Everything comes together there to for “trade, seafaring, farming, the scouring of the mines...” This helped Rome grow in military and economic strength. Rome puts policies and conditions on the smaller countries. Racism wasn't a problem even though there are many different races there. No one thought skin color were what makes them superior. It later fell by the intolerance of religion and ethnic conflicts over the land.
The Tang Dynasty was the Golden Age of China. It was very tolerance and accepts anyone who was willing to be pure to China and to be equal under Taizong's reign. Taizong was the first emperor to accept foreigners. Foreigners are people not native to the land. The previous emperors didn't really like the idea and disliked foreigners and wanted them out and wouldn't accept them. The Foreigners helped with the trading of neighboring countries. Taizong's experiment with a “universal empire” proven a failure. Tang tolerance intensified in the 9th century and a decree prohibited them from interacting with “people of color” referring to the foreigners”. Central government lost fiscal control and rebels raged.
The Chinese had a beneficial trading. They traded goods and adapted to foreigner's style and their goods. They gave the foreigners the choice to join the military. The Chinese and the foreigner acted peacefully and treated each other with equality until the 9th century when the Chinese were prohibited from interacting with the foreigners. Wuzong destroyed the temples and made them for public uses. Chinese technology is considered to be the greatest. Taizong became one of the greatest historical figure and holds the political power to controlling China during the Tang Dynasty.
The Mongol Empire started out by Temujin or Genghis Khan ruling it. Temujin started out with nothing living with his single mother and 5 starving kids to being the ruler of the largest empire. He formed an alliance with Ong Khan, leader of the Kereyid tribal. With this alliance, Ong Khan helped Temujin take over other steppe. Temujin helped the poor and accepted different religions and ethnic groups and treated them all equally. He later was betrayed by Ong Khan and fled for his life with his closest officers. They later had a counter attack and ambushed the Kereyid leaders. Temujin continued his victories conquering many other tribes and steppe. Temujin was a brilliant ruler with his brilliant attack plans and taking in engineers to design new weapons unfamiliar to the target. Together his sons, grandsons and recruited people from the Mongol clans, they continue to take more land. The emperor collapse sections after sections breaking into four pieces afterward.
The Mongols were tolerance and accepted any religion or ethnic groups. They "were more religiously open than any other power in the world." Temujin conquered more and more steppe and everyone just joined together. The Mongols had gold and pearls and so many valuable items from conquering other tribes. They also catered international merchants by providing beds, silk sheet, food, extra horses etc. They transport new varieties of citrus trees and Muslims focused on pharmacology. The Mongols started out with no technology, but then evolved into the building of weapons, building bombs, travel of horses etc. Temujin was a brilliant military leader and his battle strategies conquering tribes much bigger than them. Khubilai started adopting intolerance policies and that was the beginning of collapsing the empire.
