CYPOP5 TASK 5 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.5 As a childminder my aim is to provide a safe environment. In my home I provide: Age related toys to avoid choking etc and those are not broken or have sharp edges. Stair gates on doors Smoke alarms fitted on each floor that are checked regularly First aid kit Radiator guards Plug socket covers I do risk assessments every morning in my home and garden to check everything is safe before the children arrive. All main doors are kept locked and the key on a hook nearby out of the reach of children Alcohol is stored away and out of sight of the children Pet food kept out of reach Highchairs and boosters have the appropriate harnesses In the kitchen All household cleaners are locked away and plastic carrier bags out of reach There is a fire blanket on the wall All sharp objects including knifes are kept out of sight and reach of the children In the bathroom/ toilet All cleaning materials are kept out of reach The floor is always kept dry Toilet seats are cleaned regularly with disinfectant Outside All gates are kept locked and secure All toys are checked regularly to make sure they are not broken Large play equipment in checked to make sure it is safely secured in place Outings When going on outings all prams/ buggy’s are checked to make sure they are safe and have correct straps/ harnesses A child walking has reins or a hand strap We always cross the road in a safe place and practice road safety with the children If travelling by car I always make sure that every child is in the right car seat/ harness for their age I assess any play area or outing and do a risk assessment on it before letting the children go and play, I check the area is clean and safe and that the play equipment is safe too Medicines All medicines are stored away and out of reach from the children and are properly labelled I never give medicine without having written permission from the parents A record will be kept on when the medicine was administrated and how much was given with a signature from parents to acknowledge this. Medicines (both prescription and non prescription) must only be administered to a child where written permission for that particular medicine has been obtained from the child’s parent/ carer. Providers must keep a written record each time a medicine is administered to a child and inform the child’s parents/ carers on the same day or as soon as reasonably practical. We should also know about a child’s allergies or possible reactions they may have to their medication. This will normally be recorded in the child’s record forms when they start the setting but with children they can develop an allergy or reaction at any time so this will need checking each time medication is required. We should always give the amounts prescribed at the times set out in the instructions by the parents making a note every time a dose is given and the amount and time and to get the parents to sign a record to show they have seen it. Healthy home environment I try to maintain a clean safe healthy setting at all times I do not allow smoking in my home at any time I make sure bins are regularly emptied and cleaned I make sure all floors are clean if a baby drops a dummy I would wash it and sterilize it Risk assessments A risk assessment means looking at areas or the home environment room by room including the garden and spotting potential hazards. When we have found a potential hazard we then have to decide what changes we will need to reduce the risk. Sometime by getting down on our knees to toddler height will help us see any danger or risks that they may see. I carry out daily risk assessments looking at general everyday places we may use. I then carry out other risk assessments if we are going on an outing. Other risk assessments I do include walking/ driving to school, trips to parks, library’s, and other places of interest. I also do one for my car making sure it is safe to travel in. My personal hygiene I always wear gloves when changing nappies and cleaning up bodily fluids I always wash my hands before feeding babies and children and before handling babies’ bottles Wash hands before eating Wash hands before and after handling raw or cooked food Wash hands before dealing with cuts and grazes Wash hands after using the toilet Wash hands after changing nappies, wiping noses, touching pets or cleaning up after pets Wash hands after handling money or after being outside Children’s personal hygiene I always make sure children wash their hands before eating Always wash hands after using the toilet, coughing, sneezing, touching pets, and playing outside Nappies, toilet hygiene I always wrap disposable nappies in a bag and put in an outside dustbin as soon as possible I change individual hand towels regularly I wash out pottys with disinfectant I clean changing mats after each nappy change The current guidance on health and safety risk assessment can be found on websites such as NCMA (national childminding association) and HSE and they are in the welfare requirements of the EYFS. You can also get good guidance on websites ROSPA.com (The royal society for the prevention of accidents). They are a registered charity providing training courses and advice across the country to make people aware of the possible everyday dangers we face and possible ways that we can prevent them. Brake.org.uk is a road safety charity making people aware of the importance of crossing roads safely. They have a victim support number 0845 6038570 which you can ring if you have been a victim in an accident and they will provide advice and support. You can also find them on facebook.
