In my setting we have an a pointed health and safety officer which means her job is to do checks of the nursery to make sure things like doors, out door equipment, children bathrooms are checked regularly and in working order, all staff are trained in health and safety so we get taught how to pick and carry things correctly i.e.; picking up children carrying equipment ect.
The Statutory framework makes sure the premises and equipment are up to standards as well as all documentation is done and is kept updated and on hand if needed. In my nursery we have a suitable person that is in charge of all of the health and safety legislation and policies and procedures that are implemented in my workplace, she makes sure everything is done that the heath and safety officer finds that needs attention.
As a member of staff I was taught the following to help with health and safety in my setting:
• water hazards, for example drains, puddles, water trays;
• hazardous substances and equipment;
• the use of socket covers in electrical sockets;
• which doors are locked and which ones are open,
• how to open the windows as they open two ways one for air the other to use as an fire escape.
• flooring and stairs making sure all flooring is level and intact and the stairs have railings at adult and child height and that there is no trip hazards;
• how to stack the furniture correctly so they don’t fall;
• hygiene, cleanliness and minimising the risk of infection before and after handling food, changing nappies ect;
• make sure all paperwork is filled out and a health and safety has been done on the route and place we are going to outings and trips;
• Having regularly fire drills and going though fire safety;
• the condition of prams, pushchairs, highchairs and low chairs is checked to make sure they are in working order and will not do any harm to the adult or child;
• the use of safety harnesses in the highchairs and setting;
• the condition of toys and other equipment;
• the arrangements for monitoring children who are sleeping;
• linens such as bedding and towels are washed regularly.
• where first aid boxes are located both for children and adults.
2.1 To identify potential hazards to the health, safety and security of children or young people, families and other visitors and colleagues we do checks every morning to see if there is nothing for people to trip over and any carpet is secure. We also make sure the income system is working correctly and that all parents and staff know not to let other people in. If a member of staff sees any thing broken it is taken out of the room straight away and put in the outside dumpster if anything needs fixing that is also taken out of the room where possible and put in the maintenance mans cupboard and then it can get fixed.
When planning an activity we take into account the children’s needs and that all children will be a different development stages so we need to take this on board and plan for them correctly.
2.2
When I am in my setting I am aware of the hazards in the room from things from toys being left on the floor and children either tripping over then or walking on them. Also when we do messy play make sure any water that is spilt on the floor is cleaned up and the floor is not slippery the same goes to sand on the floor.
3.1 & 3.2 To help a child develop they need to take some risks it is you job to make sure the risks they take are minimal. Most adults don’t want to let children to put them selves in harm but children need to learn i.e. if the child is learning to walk they need to learn to balance first they wont do this unless they can wobble and fall down this does not mean the adult leaves them to it the adult can he there ready to catch them if need be. Children learn risk by being allowed and encourage to take small risks as this will gradually build up their knowledge and understanding, if they don’t they can grow into a timid adult lacking everyday skills and abilities.
The adults role is to encourage the child to explore, learn to make choices and have their voice heard when decisions are being made that involve or affect them.
Health and safety regulations may sometimes put a limit on those freedoms, so for the child's wellbeing and safety we may limit their options
3.3
When doing an water activity we set out the water tray we take the tops of the children and when the children are playing we play with them, we keep an eye on the children and if they are starting to splash the water to hard and it is going on the floor we explain to them about calming down and that they can still slash but also explain tot hem that when the water is on the floor they can slip and hurt them selves we have towels on the floor so most of the water will go on there but if it misses it the children will go get paper towels and help dry the floor up when it needs it.
4.1
In case of fire the fire alarm is raised we gather the children together and make sure they are all there we pick up the register while this is happening a member of staff checks if the route is clear if it is we take the children calmly to the garden where we sit in our room group away from the building making sure all the children and staff are there, if needed we contact the parents to collect the children. In case of illness at the first sign of the child being unwell we contact the parents to let them know the systems the child has and if they agree give the child some calpol and then we keep an eye on them if after an hour they are not feeling any better we contact the parents again to come collect them.
4.2
When a child becomes unwell and has a temperature we take their temperature every ten minutes and we write these on a temperature form with the time and temperature on it if it is above 38.1 C we contact the parents to let them know and give medicine where agreed. This is also written on a medicine form and the staff member signs it then the parents sign when they come to pick the child up.
