2.1 - Explain why positive relationships with people involved in the care of children and young people are important
It is important for other people to have positive relationships with children because the child needs to gain trust with others too. The child will need to be able to work with teachers to enable them to achieve goals through their education; they also need to feel confident at the doctors in case they need wounds dressing, or an examination of some kind. It is important to have a positive relationship with the speech therapist because they may have a barrier with communication. This can lead to the child gaining the ability to communicate with others. They may be able to learn sign language or develop the use of PECS to a better degree which will enable them to get their needs met more effectively. In the longer term this can reduce anxiety levels and behaviours because they are able to make themselves understood more easily. It is also important for me to have a good relationship with other people too. We all have the child’s best interests at heart and want to do our best to give that child the best opportunities available to them. It is vital that we share appropriate information and value each others opinions. Observing professionals in their role can help a keyworker with their own approach giving them a fuller understanding for the reasoning behind certain activities aimed at the child to help them to progress, and give them greater learning opportunities you may otherwise have been unaware of. An example of this would be how the OT specialist at my workplace has helped child B. This child is 19 years old but has very stiff joints and many mobility problems as well as very limited self-help skills. Through my working closely with OT we have been able to help child B gain some independence in learning to feed himself. The OT lady has provided a special easy to ‘grip and hold’ spoon for me to use at breakfast time with child B. She has gone through the technique of how to use this effectively and now with ‘hand over hand’ support this child has the potential to be able to feed himself in the future. Also by watching her with her exercise routines for child B we have developed a programme to enable stretching and reaching tasks within his educational day so that his arms are not so drawn into his body, but more free to move easier. Being a ‘Learning Support Assistant’ means I need to have a good relationship with the teacher. I need to observe the children I am working with and feedback to her how well the children have done with their schedules throughout the day. If a task has been too simple then we will discuss how much more difficult it may have to be made to enable them to learn something new by completing and mastering things, and also if things have been too difficult then how to make the goals more achievable to the child in question. The teacher needs to have faith and confidence in me to do my job well and to have regular discussions to seek feedback from me. I need to know that she trusts in my opinions and together we are working to provide the best possible learning outcomes we can for the children under our care. It is important that these services are here because it leads to positive outcomes for the health and well-being of the children.
