When planning a healthy and safe environment for children I consider the risks, how children might get hurt and how I can protect them for example; INDOOR ENVIRONMENT - The floors should be even and easily. There should be sufficient light and air. The heating should be adequate- neither too warm nor too cold. There should be toilet and washing facilities close by. The entry door must be lockable to prevent unwanted visitors. OUTDOOR ENVIRONMENT - The hard ground should be even and easily swept. Grassy areas should be kept tidy and mown regularly. Rubbish must be removed at least daily. The whole area must be fenced for security. A shed should be available in which to store outdoor equipment. All toys should me moved to the side.
The risk assessment in my setting identifies aspects of the environment that we check on a regular basis. We must maintain a record of these particular aspects, once its check we then date it and sign it.
At Gan Menachem we work with children, parents and the community to ensure the rights and safety of children and to give them the very best start in life. Our safeguarding policy is based on the three key commitments of the Pre-school Learning Alliance Safeguarding Children Policy.
We carry out the following procedures to ensure we meet these three key commitments. 1 - To build a 'culture of safety' in which children are protected from abuse and harm in all areas of its service delivery. 2 - To respond promptly and appropriately to all incidents or concerns of abuse that may occur and to work with statutory agencies in accordance with the procedures that are set down in 'What to do if you’re worried a child is being abused' (HMG 2006). 3 - To promote awareness of child abuse issues throughout its training and learning programmes for adults. It is also committed to empowering young children, through its early childhood curriculum, promoting their right to be strong, resilient and listened to.
We implement upright hygiene practices by: cleaning tables between activities; cleaning toilets regularly; wearing protective clothing - such as aprons and disposable gloves - as appropriate; providing sets of clean clothes; providing tissues and wipes. Windows above the ground floor are secured so that children cannot climb through them.
Our daily routines encourage the children to learn about personal hygiene. We have a daily cleaning routine for the setting which includes play room(s), rest area, toilets and nappy changing areas. The toilet area has a high standard of hygiene including hand washing and drying facilities and the disposal of nappies.
