Current Ethical Issues Baderman Island is called a slice of paradise where vacationers and business people can come to host a business retreat or take a much needed vacation (Apollo Group Inc., 2005). The size of the island resort with all the different amenities requires many employees to run day to day operations to make the guests feel comfortable. With the combination of guests and employees on an island there are many moral and ethical issues to contend with on a daily basis. Baderman Island The island attracts tourist for vacations and businesses to have conventions year around because of the amenities and beautiful weather year around. The island resort has three different hotels, a convention center, a golf course, tennis courts, a botanical garden, a lighthouse, hiking trails, horseback trails, boat and jet ski rentals, water skiing, snorkeling, scuba diving, a public beach, five secluded beaches, a spa, art gallery, a recreation center, several fine dining restaurants as well as plenty of shopping, and more (Apollo Group Inc., 2005). Baderman Island Location and History The island is located about 12 miles west of Kelsey and is surrounded by the Kelsey River, but was not an island until 2001(Apollo Group Inc., 2005). The island is named after the Baderman’s who bought 2600 acres of farmland around the Kelsey river in 1923 after imigrating from Germany in 1922(Apollo Group Inc., 2005). In 1932 they bought a lighthouse that was going to be demolitioned and moved it to the island naming it Baderman Neustadt after their old home in Germany, and then built a new mansion a mile from the lighthouse on Baderman Hill in 1956(Apollo Group Inc., 2005). The town of Kelsey which was incorporated in 1941 has played a big role in the devolopment of Baderman Island. In 1978 the town of Kelsey and the Baderman’s set a side 400 acres of land for a botanical preserve, and in 1988 the city approached the Baderman’s about redirecting the Kelesy river for flood conservation which would place a mojority of their land under water(Apollo Group Inc., 2005). The Baderman’s came up with the concept the turn the rest of the land into Baderman Island resort and renovations started to convert the Baderman estate into a resort (Apollo Group Inc., 2005). A 20 acre donation of land to the city came in 1995 in exchange for tax breaks and ferry service for the resort and in 2001 the river was redirected turning Baderman Island into a 1580 acre natural island (Apollo Group Inc., 2005). In 2001construction started for the hotels, resturants and convention center and in 2004 the island opened to the public where the Boardman Management Group took over the operational fuction of the resort (Apollo Group Inc., 2005). In exchange for the city of Kelsey using the island the Baderman’s receive incentives and tax breaks for the city (Apollo Group Inc., 2005). Ethical and Moral Issues The Board Management Group was created by the town of Kelsey and is responsible for most of the day to day operations on the island (Apollo Group Inc., 2005). The organization expects all of their employees to give customers the best unique experience they have ever had on a trip. The Board Management Group has many ethical and moral issues to contend with daily as they manage guest and employees. While the resort invites customers to come have fun and play they must also keep everyone safe. Rules have to be made so that guests do not get hurt or end up hurting other guests and employees. All guests must be respected by employees and management of Baderman Island, but guests may not disturbe other guests or break rules of the island as the land belongs to the Baderman family and they want it treated respectfully. Some guests may feel they have a right to do whatever they want on the property after paying to visit without reguard to others or the land so management must enforce the rules fairly. The management must also take steps to keep everyone safe on the island when bad weather is coming. The resort must maintain lighting detectors for all the beaches and two full time employees to monitor weather around the clock so that when bad weather is coming towards the island employees can get guests to safety. The resort also has to keep proper shelters, emergency food, water, and storm equipment to keep everyone safe during and after storms incluiding transportation to get people back to the main land. Transportation The Board Management Group keeps the resort running smoothly using ferries to transport goods and people back and forth to the main land, and trolleys for moving around the island. This helps management maintain safety on the island as they control where these vehicles can travel. Boats are only allowed in certain areas to keep swimers safe in others, and motorized vehicles have certain paths so that walkers, and bike riders can roam free from the danger of being ran over. This keeps smog and noise down so that guess can enjoy the queit and fresh air. The management knows this equipment must be in the best working order as peoples live are at stake who use it. Human resourses must also have policies in place to hire drivers such as driver’s linence checks and back groung checks so they know they are hiring the best people for the job. All the different amenities, guest and employees on the island give management many different ethical and moral issues to face daily. With over 1580 acres to control management would have a diffcult time keeping things running smoothly without rules and ethical or moral decission making. References Apollo Group Inc. (2005). Home.
