A World in Crises
Our world is ever changing, but is it changing for the better or are we slowly declining into worldwide crises' In Canada we are fortunate to have unlimited food, mini natural disasters, solid education and mostly equal rights. Many countries are not so fortunate and are living in harsh and terrible conditions every day.
Population/Demographics:
Discuss the overall trend in population growth. Where do we see the rapid increases' Where do we see the decline' Explain. In other words; why is it rising in some places and not in others'
Population tends to explode when countries are industrializing, and after the population explodes after generations will start to go down. At the moment population is rising at a rapid rate all over the world. In developing countries the education of women plays a big part in population. When the women are unable to get a proper education they resort to lives solely for family. They stay at home and take care of the children and do “womanly” duties. After World War 2 people in Canada started to repopulate tremendously exploded the result were titled “baby boomers” this made the population escalate and in theory after this generation dies off the population will start to decline.
Which areas/countries experience high population density' Why'
Asia has one of the highest population densities. Some reasons include because of their booming industries, they developed early and is the centre for most of the worlds export which has big factors on the family life, they want boys to be capable of working in the industries so many families will keep having children until they receive a boy or have many boys to get a higher income.
Explain how countries are attempting to decrease their rates of population growth'
Many countries are trying to diminish their population growth. China started a policy where families are restricted to one child; the results of this will help in the future but at the moment the abortion rate is a problem. Other countries are making the education of women more important, if women are busy getting an education then there will be less time to have many children.
Explain what is meant by carrying capacity (elevator)'
The dictionary definition of carrying capacity is the number of individuals that a habitat or an area can support and sustain with adequate resources. This means that the land can environment can support the population easily and efficiently by means of food and water and all other resources.
Explain what is meant by “the youth bulge” and “population momentum”'
The youth bulge is when a country or area has so many young people that the population cannot decline until all those young people have families and kids of their own, then they hope that that generation will not have as many children thus resulting in the decline of population.
Women and development:
Why do social scientists claim that the key to development is the education of women' What are countries doing to educate'
Education is the key for women to move up the ladder of society. The idea that women are inferior to men has been embedded in our culture, even though there are people out there that believe women are as smart and strong enough to handle all the things that men do it’s not enough to make an impact on society. Many women strive their best to be equal to men, and the main goal to slowly change the view of the world is through education. A women with knowledge is a respectable woman, she has the power to make people listen to her and the charisma that makes people follow her. A woman who has education won’t be forced to live in her home as solely a caregiver and nothing else.
Do you think that it is true that women “carry the burden” in the developing world' Explain'
I believe that yes women do carry the burden in the developing world; I believe this because although men are the ones who receive the income women are the ones who get the food, care for the family, get the water every day, has to face abuse from their husband on some occasions. Women have to face harsh living conditions all over the world every day.
Hunger
What are the key factors that contribute to malnutrition'
Some of the key factors of malnutrition are active tuberculosis, also diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease hemorrhages, rabbit starvation and iodine toxicity. There are 800 million people chronically malnourished in the world; 12 million of these are children under 5 die from hunger related diseases.
Identify some of the diseases cause by malnutrition.
Some diseases caused by malnutrition include marasmus which is a result from a lack of sufficient kilojoules to sustain life. Kwashiorkor is caused by a diet high in carbohydrates and low in proteins. Beriberi is a result of a vitamin B deficiency.
Resources and consumption
Which region is in the most favorable position regarding resources' Explain.
I think North America has the most favorable position regarding resources because they can have almost anything they wish. They have unlimited access to food, clothing, water, supplies, oil. While this region gets to live in fortune and have almost endless resources there are many developing countries that are less fortunate and are living in extreme poverty and dying of hunger.
Has the presence of cash crops in the developing world contributed to an inability to access resources'
Yes cash crops have contributed to an inability to access resources because when companies have these crops they kick families off the land and take over. Sugar cane for example is grown in over 110 countries, Brazil being the largest supplier. Slaves are used in the industries to produce and are not paid very good money.
Which regions of the world consume the most' Provide data
North America consumes the most out of any other region. They also waste the most. North America has the most food and water resources and could easily help the world but they are too greedy and selfish.
War and peace
Explain how the presence of a valuable recourse can lead to conflict. Provide a specific example.
When there is a valuable resource in a country on many occasions the occupants of that country will fight each other and other countries to gain control of the resource or the industry that supplies it. Sierra Leone has seen serious and grotesque human rights violations since 1991 when the civil war erupted. According to Human Rights Watch, over 50,000 people have been killed to date, with over one million people having been displaced. There have been numerous factors contributing to problems such as the diamond connection, the gross abuses committed by both rebel and government forces, and the problems of the current peace treaty.
Why and how are the child soldiers recruited' And how are they trained to be fierce warriors'
Child soliders are recruited because a they are easy targets for the rebels to pick up, they will listen and are usually very submissive. When rebels raid villages they will chose from the children and take the ones who look the strongest. They are trained by being manipulated and the rebels put thoughts into their heads that what they are doing is right. These children have no sense of what is right and wrong. They are given fake names and given AK-47s, after they have killed people it becomes easier and easier.
Explain the poverty- repression- militarization cycle'
This cycle is when the military in a country lead to the concentration of wealth and reduction of investment in development projects. The increasing poverty that results can lead to political destabilization, which man lead to repression. The effects of this could lead to mortality, famine, refugee migrations and the destruction of home and livelihood.
Explain the function of NGOs
The NGOs are a nongovernmental organization they are usually nonprofit and they are task-oriented and driven by people with a common interest, some are organized around specific issues, such as human rights, environment or health
Our world is ever changing we just have to sort our priorities and get it changing for the better instead of for the worst. If everyone worked together we could make a difference no matter how minimal would help make the world a better place.
