Composing Music for Animations Is Often a Futile Task
One of the nation’s composers believes the exorbitant expenses necessary for producing animations are not always provided, animation projects get stopped and hence the efforts of everyone involved, including the composer, wind up to be futile.
According to Iran Music News Database, expressing the characteristics of composing for animations, Arash Adel-Pour said, “Because of the imaginary and fantastical situations of animations, the music also should be fantastical, and this is done by choosing certain melodies and orchestrations.”
“Comparing the animation soundtracks with the cinema soundtrack, one can assert that in cinema the music is more real, while in animations the use of effects is more usual.” He said.
Adel-Pour added, “Since the characters in animations don’t have mimic faces and can’t express the feeling of the scene with their faces, the music has to relate the mood of the underlying layers of the story and compensate for the loss.”
“Effective forms (series of notes without any melody) are heard a lot in the animation soundtracks, and this is true for funny films, unlike serious films,” Added the composer.
About problems of composing music for animations he said, “All over the world, animation industry is an expensive and costly one. In our country, when the needed expenses for producing animations are declared to the sponsor institution or organization, the reaction is usually disagreement from the latter part and so the project gets stopped or the expenses are heavily prorated so that it can move on.”
He said, “This is why animation producers have to reduce the expenses, and their incomes, and this in turn ultimately leads to the financial loss of the animation producers.”
He ended his words saying “In general, animations are not taken seriously in our country, hence their costs are not taken seriously as well and the budget allocating is pretty low. One can say that cinema and producing cinema is more serious for the producers and so the costs for films are more substantial and acceptable than animations.”
