Compare and contrast the different ways person-centred and psychodynamic approaches to counselling understand and make use of counselling relationship
In this essay I will compare and contrast person-centred counselling and psychodynamic counselling and how the relationship between counsellor and client works in both theories. I will do this by explaining what person-centred counselling means to me than what psychodynamic counselling means to me , then I will compare the two then I will contrast the two, I will go on to explain the different types of relationships the counsellor and the client have and I will finishes of by summarizing what I have written.
The person-centred approach was developed by psychologist Dr Carl Rogers (1902-1987) who proposed new humanistic ideas for counselling.*
In my view person-centred counselling is that the counsellor creates a safe, calm environment where the client doesn’t feel threatened physically or psychologically the counsellor sits on the same level as the client with no desk or anything in-between they don’t want to come across or appear to be a figure of authority. The counsellor will have a good understanding of themselves they will be honest and open and not hide behind a mask, they completely accept everything about the client they will not judge and they will give the client the respect they deserve.
Person-centred counsellors believe that there clients have the answers inside of themselves they can identify their feelings and find out what’s going on for them with help, guidance and encouragement from the counsellors they work towards changing the way the client perceives themselves. Its also not just about the past it is also about looking towards a positive future.
In person-centred therapy there are three core prinables whice are empathy, unconditanal positive regards and congruence.
Psychodynamic therapy takes as its roots the work of Freud (who most have heard of) melanie klien (who developed the work with children) and Jung (who was a pupil of Freud yet broke away to devolope his own theories)*
In psychodynamic therapy the thory belives that our past effects our present it works on the assumption that all of us have a suc-consious mind so things that have happened in our past that creates feelings that we are uncomfortable with and find to painful to feel so without our awareness we as human beings put in our own defence mecamisam so we sub-consiously denie these feelings, this thory belivs that these defences have gone wrong and are causing the client more harm then good during therapy we can identifie these true feeling and investigate them to see them for what they really are and then they become less painful to deal with.
Transference is a big part of pyscodynamic theories. When we first meet somebody we can usally decide sub-consiously if we are going to see that person again and continue a relationship with them. Most people we meet in life remind us of someone significant from our past. Depending on how things where with that person in the past and the kind of relationship we have with them can determind how we behave with the person we meet in the present and how we see them so for example when we first meet our counsellor as a athoraty figure or we may feel better then them, we may take an instant dislike to them because of a bad past experance or we may like them because of a happy past experience, e may go child like because we may see them as we saw oue parents ect.
Countertransference is basically the opposite to transference, so basically it is the feelings that is brought up for the counsellor from the client , however the counsellor should not refuse to work with someone just because they don’t make them feel good and only work with people that do mke them feel good instead the counsellor use there knowledge of countertransference to give the same service to all its clients. The counsellor should have complete acceptance of a client and will give them the respect they deserve as a human being. They should not judge not matter what you issus are.
