Communication and Collaboration Harold W. Smith Gen/200 May24, 2010 Lynette Herring Communications and Collaborations The eight different learning styles according to Howard Gardner based upon the readings are:”bodily-kinesthetic, intrapersonal, logical-mathematical, verbal-linguistic, musical-rhythmic, visual-spatial, interpersonal and naturalistic” (Carter, Bishop, & Kravits, (2007), p. 39.) According to Howard Gardner, the Harvard University professor, defines intelligence as “is an ability to solve problems or fashion products that are useful in a particular cultural setting” (Carter, Bishop, & Kravits, (2007), p. 38.) Gardner also believes “that the way you learn is a unique blend of intelligences, resulting from you distinctive abilities, challenges, experiences, and training” (Carter, Bishop, & Kravits, (2007), p. 39.) The paper will discuss the following three areas: intrapersonal, interpersonal and verbal/linguistic. The intrapersonal learning style is “ability to understand one’s own behavior and feelings (self-awareness, independence, time spent alone)” (Carter, Bishop, & Kravits, (2007), p. 39.) The characteristics of the intrapersonal learning style are: he evaluates his own thinking, knows how to express his feelings and understands himself in relation to others. To communicate and collaborate effectively within a group this particular learning style, he would think before he reacts in relation to the group, express his feelings and reason with the group when individuals or topics that may arise. The interpersonal learning style is “ability to relate to others, noticing their moods, motivations, and feelings (social activity, cooperative learning, teamwork)” (Carter, Bishop, & Kravits, (2007), p. 39.) The characteristics of the interpersonal learner are as follows: he can see the perspective of others in the group can cooperate within a group, use both verbal, nonverbal skills and maintain relationships within the group. To communicate and collaborate effectively, he would see things from the perspective of others’ more than his own, would cooperate communicate both verbally and nonverbally. The verbal/linguistic learning style is “ability to communicate through language (listening, reading writing, speaking)” (Carter, Bishop, & Kravits, (2007), p. 39.) Characteristics, of the verbal/linguistic are: analyze his own use of language, remember terms and simply, explain topics with humorously and convince people to do various tasks. The four different personality types are the thinker, organizer, giver, and the adventurer. Assessments help the individual understand how an individual may respond to various situations this may include information, his thoughts, his feelings, people he may know and events. The following three outlined here are: the thinker, the organizer and the giver. The thinker is the problem solver, explores ideas and thinks outside the box. This particular type of personality thinks through various situations will explore new ideas and go outside the proverbial box. The thinker will help others expand upon his thinking, will help with new ideas and go outside the box. He can take thinking to a whole new level and help others expand upon his or her thinking. The giver is a caring, sociable, spiritual individual. He will put others before himself, has an open mind, very talkative and honest. This type of personality is easy to work with he will be the interpreter of the group. He will put others’ before himself, often has an open mind, developing an understanding of various situations and is honest. The organizers personality type is tactical, a planner and pays attention to the details. He will keep the group moving forward in a strategic comprehensive way. He is disciplined, uses tactics and will use a plan of action. He will keep the group on track through, planning and the details, he will ensure the project is complete and on time. In conclusion, with the help of Howard Gardner’s perception of intelligence and the Myers-Briggs personality spectrum gives insight into the way an individual may learn as well as understand his personality type. The intrapersonal, interpersonal and the verbal-linguistic learning styles as well as the thinker, the giver and the organizer each learn differently. Individual learning styles and personality types are important to understand, so strengths and weaknesses will manifest themselves in the highest efficiency for the performance of the group.
