Communication Executive Summary A company must be aware and acknowledge nonverbal communication to begin improving their business. Successful nonverbal communication is determined by emotional awareness and an understanding of sending and receiving diverse cues. Effective nonverbal communication between fellow employees is a key factor that contributes to the success of an organization. Recommendations of how to improve nonverbal communication in an organization is presented. There is extensive research in the field of nonverbal communication Introduction Communication is essential to any functioning organization. More importantly, nonverbal communication is vital in determining the success of an organization. Communication is a process that takes place continuously as individuals interact with one another on a day to day basis. There are several forms of communication. One way of communicating is through verbal communication. Nonverbal acts portray subconscious feelings that lead to consequences. These consequences can impact the effectiveness of an organization. Customer service is an aspect of an organization where non-verbal communication can be critical. The impression between strangers who have a goal of buying and selling a product can be evaluated through the use of nonverbal communication. Another area where nonverbal communication influences an organization is in management. Effective nonverbal communication is necessary in order for a manager to smoothly handle their project and maintain the decorum of their organization. Proper communication between fellow employees is another key factor that contributes to the success of an organization. This communication which includes non-verbal communication is constantly noticed among colleagues. Body language, facial expressions, and other nonverbal gestures express the attitude of the sender to the receiver. This attitude is what progresses communications between colleagues. In order for an organization to succeed in the areas of customer service, management, and employees relations, it is very important to improve nonverbal communication skills. Nonverbal Communications in Customer Service An organization that has established a successful customer service title is usually proficient in their nonverbal communication. In order for any service to take place between two interacting individuals, some sort of communication takes place. When this communication takes place, nonverbal communication automatically plays a role in it. Nonverbal communication contains several related functions that can reinforce or contradict a verbal message. One way it can support a verbal message is by showing a hand gesture that reinforces what an individual was already trying to say. Nonverbal Communications in Management Managers are constantly communicating; by improving their nonverbal communication skills, they are automatically enhancing their communication skills which will eventually make them better leaders. According to Gentry and Kuhnhert, true leaders never stop communicating (Gentry & Kuhnert, 2007, p.4). It is imperative for managers to constantly be aware of their daily conversations. Employees get frustrated when management sends conflicting signals through nonverbal cues. Managers should try to alter their behavior and be honest when communicating their emotions (Gabbott & Hogg, 2001, p.17). It is common among organizations where managers do not show emotions to their employees. Confusion can be avoided if individuals acknowledge nonverbal communication during an interaction. Managers and employees can benefit from learning nonverbal behaviors in dealing with challenging situations (Gabbott & Hogg 2001). The ability to receive nonverbal communication is nearly as important as sending nonverbal signals as a manager or leader. Awareness is the key for leaders to improve as communicators. It can be a challenge to recognize nonverbal communication and to be consistently aware to correctly portray the appropriate behavior. The genuine character and motivation of management can be valued with nonverbal communication. Conclusions Nonverbal communication has a vast impact in all organizations especially within customer service, management, and employee-to-employee relations. Ways of improving communication in organizations include paying more attention to facial expressions, engaging in eye contact, and pursuing more communication cues when they do not exist. Effective business communications is determined by proper interpretation and use of nonverbal cues.
