Communication and Collaboration Strategy Kimberly Parker GEN/200 June 10, 2010 Donna Baker Communication and Collaboration Strategy “What is effective for one learner may be ineffective for another. Learning styles will differ among learner based on how they concentrate on process, internalize and recall content.” (Honingsfeld and Dunn, 2006) Several learning styles and personality types dictate the process of communication and collaboration among individuals. While this is very important in recognizing these different learning styles and personality types, it is equally important to adapt a strategy to communicate effectively and possibly reach a common goal. I will look at the styles and types that I scored highly on in the assessment. Bodily-Kinesthetic, Verbal –Linguistic and Interpersonal as just a few of the different learning styles and a Thinker, Adventurer, and Organizer as different personality types and some possible strategies to communicate and collaborate within them. First I will describe Interpersonal learning, this type describes how people see things from another’s point of view. Creating a relationship with others and participating or cooperating within a group presents a sound atmosphere for discussion. This enables individuals to learn from one another by expressing individual ideas and experiences. Secondly, Bodily- Kinesthetic learning, describes how people are able to process information through hand and body movement control and expression. They would prefer direct involvement with material they are learning. They understand and retain material longer when it is used or presented in an active way. Lastly under the types of learners I will describe Verbal- Linguistic learners these type learners describe how people are able to express themselves well and are usually good listeners, they learn best when taught using spoken word or written materials. In addition the Verbal –Linguistic learner asks lots of question, enjoys talking, has an extensive vocabulary. This type of learner can pick up on a second language easily, and has an large memory for places, dates and trivia. First Personality type Thinker is described as a person who is driven by facts, logic and reason. This type likes to look at evidence and weighs the pros and cons before making decisions. This type is very rational and open minded and are usually people who value the truth. I tend to read too much into anything, thinking about what should happen before I make a decision. The next personality type that I will look at is the Adventurer, this person is described as “not made for the quite life”( Humanmetrics.com). This type is a creative type that enjoys composing original ideas, and to complete tasks in new and exciting ways. The person labeled with this type should be allowed the freedom to be as original as they can possibly be this will enhance his/her abilities. I enjoy taking the fun way around when doing an assignment, doing it different excites me. Lastly, Organizers are described as responsible and reliable and needs tasks clearly stated in order to understand what is expected of him/her. This type follows through on assignments or tasks because they generally use journals or planners to schedule task and set appointments. I would prefer to communicate on paper and would like to see everything, when doing assignments I must make copies of every assignment. It is my belief that each of these Learning Styles and Personality Types can work effectively together if each team member is assigned a task that will highlight his/her strength. References Linda V.
