Communication and Collaboration Strategy
Just like life in general there is many different ways people react to certain situations, this is the same for learning styles. I myself have struggled through out my education in finding the perfect learning style that would help me out in the long run. Some of the common learning styles have been explained to me time and time again but I have yet found one that I prefer. The following three learning styles are in my opinion the most common in which I will elaborate a strategy for effective communication and collaboration among them.
Learning Styles
Verbal/Linguistic, this is a learning style in which we tend to change terms around to make it easy for us to remember. Involves taking written and mental notes emphasizing key words that will help us remember a lecture or reading assignment. Putting complex words and definitions in your own words, often people tend to use humor as a vital role for this learning style. When encountering this particular learning style, I find it useful if I communicate with the individual in a common sense way utilizing humor to share my opinion.
Intrapersonal, The (2003) Web site Inspiring Breakthrough [Howard Gardener, in his book ‘Frames of Mind’ defines Intrapersonal Intelligence as sensitivity to our own feelings, our own wants and fears, our own personal histories, awareness of our own strengths and weaknesses, plans and goals]. In this learning style the individual is more aware of expressing their feelings and understanding self interaction with other alums. This is one of the most difficult learning styles to communicate with. Individuals tend to keep to themselves and at times not willing to open up to discussion. It is essential that you approach these particular individuals in a non-aggressive way since there is already a barrier that you are trying to break through. Find something in common or an idea that you both agree with, this will help break the ice and create the communication factor between the individuals.
The interpersonal learning technique is a style that the individual processes the point of view of other alums. They are more open to discussion and feed off information coming from different angles. These individuals are more likely to create and maintain relationships with classmates. The utilization of study groups is high with this particular learning style. There is no communication obstacle with this style of learning. Individuals are more open to verbal and nonverbal contact with others creating a more hassle free learning environment.
Personality Types
Along with different learning styles there are different personality types that come into play when working together as a group.
Thinker personalities often analyses all the information prior to putting it on paper or making any verbal comments. They often look to work independently so they could develop new ideas without distractions. This personality dislikes repetitive tasks. Communication with thinker personalities could be difficult at times. Since they tend to just analysis not cooperate in group collaborations it is important that the discussion is straight to the point. Going back and forth will lead to losing interest on the conversation.
Organizer personalities enjoy the work that requires detailed information and follow through ensuring completion of assigned task. They like having a strong sense of responsibility and strive on efficiency. Communication and collaboration with an organizer trait is easy. They constantly request feedback which opens up the table for exchange of ideas.
According to Bishop (2002), Giver personality [function best in a warm, harmonious
working environment with the possibility of interacting with openness and honesty. You prefer to
avoid conflict and hostility. You thrive when your creative approach to your work is appreciated
and praised]. This personality has the most open communication barrier since they tend to avoid conflict within a study group. These individuals collaborate more in a group environment which helps them remember difficult information.
Conclusion
Understanding the different learning styles, and understanding the different personality styles is essential for success in a working or learning environment. It is important to understand that not everyone learns the same way or has the same personality. We live in a diverse world with different ideas and different backgrounds. It is critical that we acknowledge the various styles of learning early in our working/learning career. Doing so will only prepare us for success.
