Communication and Collaboration Strategy
There are many benefits to knowing what learning style an individual is categorized and also learning what personality type category an individual falls. I have learned that I fall into the Interpersonal learning style while I undertake the categories of Organizer and Thinker in the personality spectrum.
When knowing what an individual’s learning style means, it helps you create a better understanding with the most effective way to learn. The learning style will help you also understand where you will not be as effective in retaining information.
Understanding your personality will help create ideas within your most effective learning style in order to produce the quality of work that is expected.
Also, when learning about different personalities, it gives you a “heads up” that not everyone is like you. Everyone thinks and learns in their respective way. So, when working with others, you will need to take a look at where the others may fall with their learning styles and personalities to help avoid negative confrontations and conflicts.
Discovery of Learning Style
An individual’s learning style is unique to the individual. The learning style is the individual’s mind’s way of taking in and processing information. In discovery of my own particular learning style, I took an assessment called “Multiple Pathways to Learning” which focuses on learning strengths and preferences. The assessment is based on Professor Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Theory. Upon completion of the assessment, I found that my strengths lie within the Interpersonal and Bodily-Kinesthetic learning styles and my weakness in learning lies within the Naturalistic category.
Interpersonal Learning Style
The Interpersonal learning style gives me the ability to relate to others by noticing other’s moods, motivations and feelings. I have found that the assessment is true. I feel as though I do have the ability to relate to others. Just recently with our team project, I noticed how our team leader was becoming frustrated and anxious about getting our assignment completed. I wanted to step up and help as much as possible because her feelings were becoming my own.
Bodily-Kinesthetic Learning Style
The Bodily-Kinesthetic learning style gives me the ability to use my physical body skillfully to take in knowledge through coordination and use a “hands-on” approach. I am still a little confused with how this learning style became one of my strong points. However, I have noticed that I rock when I stand or sit and I tend to curl my hair in my fingers if I am sitting still. I also do like doing things using my own hands. When learning something new that is physical, such as cooking, I like to move along and repeat the lesson while actually performing the cooking tasks myself instead of just reading about it in a book.
Naturalistic Learning Style
My weakest learning style is the Naturalistic learning style. With this style of learning, an individual has the ability to understand the features of the environment. This also confused me upon completion of the assessment. I do enjoy the outdoors and I find that nature relaxes me when I am stressed. However, I have no interest in working in nature or understanding all aspects of the environment.
Learning My Personality
The assessment I used to learn what my personality was within the Personality Spectrum was based on the “Myers-Briggs Type Inventory” which was developed by Katharine Briggs and her daughter, Isabel Briggs Myers. The Personality Spectrum was then broken into 4 categories: Thinker, Giver, Organizer and Adventurer. After completion of the assessment, I found that I fall into the categories of “Organizer” and “Giver.” Before I finished the assessment, I thought that I would be a “Giver” and “Organizer,” so it did not shock me when I read the results. My weakest personality is an “Adventurer.” I also find this to be very true.
Organizer
An “Organizer” likes to have tasks defined in a clear, concrete manner, requires feedback, likes to work in a well-structured environment, and likes to organize materials by highlighting, taking notes, and/or making flashcards.
I work very well when I know exactly what is expected of me and when. I also love to highlight important material so it is easier to read at a later date. I also like to read feedback from my peers. Communicating is very important and if something is not clear, I will need to ask questions and receive answers before I am able to move forward.
Giver
A “Giver” is honest, open, and enjoys helping others. I find that the assessment is also correct in defining this personality for me. I do enjoy helping others understand the material and I also consider myself to be honest and open with questions, concerns and thoughts. If something needs to be done within my team for an assignment due, I am more than willing to take on the task.
Adventurer
The “Adventurer” is very spontaneous, courageous, and daring. This person also has a knack for negotiating. While I would love to possess these qualities, I am more of a traditional person and I cannot negotiate for my life.
