Communication and Collaboration Strategy
Individual personality types and learning styles play a significant role in how people function as a group or team. I have developed a strategy to promote effective communication and collaboration among individuals with various learning styles. Following the learning style scenario, I will share a similar strategy based on different personality types. Keep in mind that I am highlighting only a few of many learning styles and personality types that make individuals as unique as we all are.
Learning Style Strategy
The three different learning styles incorporated in this collaboration strategy are logical/mathematical, verbal/linguistic and interpersonal. An individual with strong logical/mathematical abilities will be responsible for creating the group’s approach to each project because they possess logical reasoning and problem-solving skills. Preparation of papers and written portions of other projects or assignments are best handled by someone who has strong language skills – an individual that has verbal/linguistic intelligence. Interpersonal skills that include a person’s ability to relate to others and his or her moods, motivations and feelings will be essential to hold the team together. The team member who possesses these skills will add insight to the cooperative learning and understanding among team members.
These same individual learning styles promote effective team communication by bringing specific skills to the group. The individual with strong logical/mathematical intelligence will be able to clearly and logically explain their views and material to other team members. A team member who has strong verbal/linguistic skills will be an asset for communication through their naturally keen use of language and understanding of words. This individual will often be able to convince other team members to do something or agree with the group’s point of view. Similar to their role in the collaboration strategy, the person with advanced interpersonal skills will help by creating adhesion amongst team members by understanding him or herself and being aware of his or her own and others’ feelings when expressing their opinions and viewpoints.
Personality Type Strategy
I have chosen organizer, thinker and giver for the three personality types in the collaboration strategy. The organizer has efficiency, reliability and organizational skills and will create the outline and plans for approaching projects or assignments for the team. A strong set of skills for the thinker includes problem-solving and analytical thinking. They will go beyond the boundaries and expectations. This team member will be an asset in his or her research and gathering materials for papers. Negotiation skills and fostering the potential of themselves and others are abilities of the giver. This skill set will enhance the overall team functionality and performance as individuals bond and work together.
All three of these personality types also bring very valuable abilities and traits to enhance the communication within a team. The organizer thrives in a well-structured and stable environment. Requesting feedback and asking questions are two key components that this individual will add to effective team communication. Thinkers will question and explore ideas therefore generating deeper communication amongst team members. This deeper communication will also create high-quality, highly intellectual projects and assignments. The giver’s open style is essential to effective communication. This team member will be able to express thoughts and feelings clearly while being aware of others feelings. Givers will have successful, close relationships therefore helpful in building strong, supportive teams.
There are so many factors that influence how we work as individuals in a group or team setting. A person thrives with various learning styles, personality traits and approaches to his or her own assignments and tasks. The team environment is challenging because we all bring different sets of skills, abilities, and preferences to the table. Being aware of our own preferences as well as the strengths and weaknesses of our teammates will give the group insight into the best approach to each task. This awareness and use of strategic planning will help ensure a successful and high-performance team.
