Teaching assistant always working under the direction of the class teacher or subject teacher. Good classroom behaviour management is essential for lessons to run smoothly. Anticipation and effective management of problems will ensure that any disruption is minimised, allowing pupils to spend the maximum time on tasks set. Today’s classrooms often contain a team of educational professionals, with learning support assistants, specialist teaching assistants, behaviour support assistants and higher-level teaching assistants all coming under the broad umbrella of "teaching assistant." The role and authority of each staff member should be clearly defined and understood by both staff and pupils, as confusion in this area may result in pupils attempting to play one staff member of against another. Teaching assistants and teachers should set aside time for planning, review and evaluation to ensure effective co-operation between staff members, resulting in a consistent standard of work and behaviour being expected from pupils. The term “teaching assistant” indicates their central role of supporting the teacher. Teacher assistants provide instructional and clerical support for classroom teachers, allowing teachers more time for lesson planning and teaching. They support and assist children in learning class material using the teacher's lesson plans, and help prepare materials for instruction. Teacher assistants also supervise students in the cafeteria, schoolyard, and hallways, or on field trips; they record grades, set up equipments, listening to pupils, enabling the pupil to access the curriculum, providing students with individualized attention and gaining the pupils trust. Some teacher assistants perform exclusively non-instructional or clerical tasks, such as monitoring non-academic settings. Playground and lunchroom attendants are examples of such assistants. Most teacher assistants, however, perform a combination of instructional and clerical duties. They generally provide instructional reinforcement to children, under the direction and guidance of teachers. They work with students individually or in small groups—listening while students read, reviewing or reinforcing class lessons, or helping them find information for reports. At the secondary school level, teacher assistants often specialize in a certain subject, such as math or science. Teacher assistants often take charge of special projects and prepare equipment or exhibits, such as for a science demonstration. Some assistants work in computer laboratories, helping students to use computers and educational software programs. Many teacher assistants work extensively with special education students. As schools become more inclusive and integrate special education students into general education classrooms, teacher assistants in both general education and special education classrooms increasingly assist students with disabilities. They attend to the physical needs of students with disabilities, including feeding, teaching grooming habits, and assisting students riding the school bus. They also provide personal attention to students with other special needs, such as those who speak English as a second language and those who need remedial education. Teaching assistants support the school by working with other staff members as a team, attending staff meetings, working in partnership with parents and making contribution in accessing and reviews. They also provide their support for the curriculum under the direction of the class or subject teacher.
