Assignment: Organization of the Police Department Police departments are run by many different people. There are always the chief which is in charge of all the officers and the branches from there. There are then the people that are in charge of the chief which is the mayor of the city and the state that the chief is part of. All police departments have to be well organized and have SOP’s which stands for Standard Operating Procedures and all departments have them. Every case that you run into is going to be different while being a police officer but the basic format of the case is going to be listed in the SOP’s. The standard operating procedure tells all department personnel how they are suppose to arrest someone, how they are suppose to separate people, what kind of back up they will need, if they need to run lights and sirens, if they need to come in silent. All that is going to fall into the standard operating procedures. Organization is key to running a department efficiently, if a department is not organized correctly that is when someone gets hurt or a life is taken. Here in Rockford Illinois the chief has told me that they have been working on there organization all the time and they have actually called in the FBI to help them out and make sure that everything that they are implementing works out as it is suppose to. Rockford police department is divided into categories such as the K9 Units, Special Forces, Unmarked, NARCS, SWAT, Task Force, the Auto Burglary Unit, and Traffic. All these units have there own jobs plus when there really is not anything to do in there category they help out the other units that they are trained in especially traffic. Rockford Illinois police department is also divided into districts, there is the northeast, northwest, southeast and southwest districts. Each unit patrols there districts unless on district is busy on another call and then that’s when they start to leave there district to help out the other. Rockford police department runs twelve hour shift and they have a schedule of working Monday, Tuesday, off Wednesday, Thursday, work Friday, Saturday, Sunday, off Monday, Tuesday, work Wednesday, Thursday, off Friday, Saturday, Sunday. They get 36 hours one week and 48 the next. This gets it so that they are working one about half of each month and half the year. The mission of Rockford Police Department is to protect and serve the community. It is to cut down on the crime in the city and to make it a safe place for everyone to live. The department runs all types of training exercises in front of the community so we can see how they are out to protect us and what they are suppose to do for each call from a traffic stop to a drug raid. All departments have there issues and they face them as they come. One of the issues that they Rockford police have been facing for a while now is the one of racism on the community. Rockford has several different religion officers that work every day from whites, blacks, to Mexicans and a couple Chinese. There was this one case that one of the officers shot a black guy in the basement of a church daycare. The family of the person shot is raising hell and calling the department racist and keep raising complications and hurdles for the department to get over. The department has had a outside source come in and investigate the shooting and they classified the shooting justified. Well the family did not think that it was right so they pushed for the FBI to come in and do a whole new investigation. The one resource that I am using is the departments website which is www.ci.rockford.il.us, this is where I have gotten all the information except what I have got from the actually police officers or the chief himself. They say that once the department got the chief it has now is when the organization started to kick in, this chief put his foot down because there were so many accidents that were happening with the previous chief causing officers to lose time off or there life.
