WITH REFRENCE TO WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNT ABOUT CITY ROAD , OUTLINE SOME OF THE DIFFRENCES ACROSS TIME AND SPACE ON THE STREET THAT YOU KNOW.
Social inequalities occur in everyday life, and are due to many different reasons Wealth, Health, Education, Race and Employment are just a few examples. The differences between two streets in very different places are minimal, yet in the same way quite vast. The structures around these places always stay the same. The streets are set out very similar in that traffic lights, lamp posts, electricity, water and gas supplies are always present in today’s society . It is on these streets ;however, that social inequalities are present but not always apparent, until we start to analize things and look around for them.
In this assignment, I am going to compare a little town where I live Epworth in comparison to City Road in Cardiff. I will also examine the inequalities between the two.
City road in Cardiff is very popular with its residents as it caters for everyone. It is very busy with pedestrians and vehicles and it is also a main bus route which is a major part of peoples lives. At one end of this road is the so called death junction (Blakeley LC1 2009 PG18) also dvd . This is a large crossroads; however it is not called death junction because of accidents, but because two priests were executed on this site during the English reformation.
The road is lined with shops on both sides. Some of these are big chains and some are smaller shops that are family run .There are shops on this road that cater for people of different ethnicities, as the community is such a contrast and wealth.
It is also lined with pubs, clubs, restaurants and takeaways that get very busy especially at night. One in particular is the Hawaiian restaurant which is very popular with the females of the community (Blakeley LC1 2009 PG30). This sometimes means that the males are often turned at times which can make them feel disassociated. but makes women feel secure.
There is also the Mackintosh Centre which started out as a wealthy landowner's house and was then changed into a community sports centre which at times is exclusive to certain people . At the weekend it is transformed into a market that is attended by most of the community for different reasons but mainly for food, of all types.
There is also a working man’s club on this road that is not as busy as it once was. The road is described as rough by some members of this club (Blakeley ). This allegation is denied by police, as this constitutes that there may always be trouble!, but its part of the community that residents would not dare to go at night .
“Epworth” is quiet a small place which is also very popular with its residents. It is on a main bus route, but only has a few buses a day , although the buses are not really used to their capacity because it is rural most people have access to their own car , although unlike City road there is very little parking .
The town centre is lined with shops on both sides, and these are small independent shops. There is also a few food chains selling mainly English food.
Epworth also has 4 pubs, 2 restaurants and take outs in the town but unlike City rd its very quite at night and it has equality for both men and women to go anywhere at any time in any pub , restaurant unlike city road .
Epworth Town Centre has no shops that cater for people of a different ethnicity. Within our community we only have 3 black families, 2 Iranian families and 1 Indian family. And these people all live in different areas of the village. There are certain areas that have been called rough by the residents, which is maily areas with a low income, and council housing areas. This is possibly an exaggeration as the areas are quite safe to walk around at night unlike City road.
In conclusion I found that Epworth is quite different to City Road, but only due to the fact that I don't live in an ethnic community. Although we all have the same inequalities no matter where we are in the world and that we do not always realise that these situations are all around us. The structures around these areas almost never change the buildings, the traffic lights and the road signs are always the same. As a result inequalities are almost never recognised even though they are part of everyday life.
SELF REFLECTION
I found this difficult to get in to start with just because the area i I've in is so different to city rd due to culture , but after resorting the evidence i needed and comparing what i found i began to love looking , at what life is really like for other people , even though its different , we are all quite the same , time management was good for me as im someone who does not sleep much .the refrence side of it i found hard as it has been so long since i have had to do this.
