Childhood Obesity Catherine Sams ENG 122 English Composition II Instructor: Lisa Clark February 27, 2012 Childhood Obesity Is childhood obesity becoming a big problem in the United States' Yes childhood obesity is becoming a big problem in the United States it is taking over lots of children and adult lives. Obesity has been around nearly as long as man isn’t much of a stretch. Obesity in children has become a real problem in America. Childhood obesity is a medical condition that affects millions of children in the United States (Kiesbye, 2009). The children are eating more and more every day, but they are not exercising. The parents are encouraged to show their children how to eat, and what would be healthier to eat. They can also show them how to get their physical activities in their daily routine. Obesity affects their self-esteem to where they do not want to be around other people. Some are picked on really bad to the point they take their own lives. With obesity taking over the children lives more, they are more prone to more health problems. High blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes are; forming more in children. According to the Centers for Disease Control, people who are obese in childhood or adolescence are more likely to be obese as adults. If you feel that obesity is taking over the young children lives what do you think should be done to help it' Parents have to start cutting their children intake of fast food, and greasy foods out of their children diet. Parents can help their children avoid the intake of unhealthy foods by making well balance meals and healthy snacks. Eating smaller or reasonably-sized portions can help with this obesity problem. Parents are the ones that are responsible for what their children eat on a daily base and how much they eat. Americans might not be gaining so much weight if they were not also burning off fewer calories in physical activities than ever before (Loonin, 2007). Most schools require physical education during the instructional day. Parents should encourage their children to drink more water. The fatty foods that are being taking in are increasing the obesity in children. The USDA guideline advise that children eat a balanced diet heavy in nutrient- dense foods and beverages from each of the five food groups, which include grains, vegetables, fruits, milk and meats and beans (Loonin, 2007). Most fruits, vegetables and grains have antioxidants in them that help keep the body clean. Taking time away from the television, the computer, and the game systems and replace them with more exercises to their daily activity will help prevent child obesity. Preventing childhood obesity, parents should be encouraged to teach and be role models for their young children (Olstad and McCargar, 2009). Obesity really does have a toll on children self-esteem to where they do not want to be around other people. If parents and other adults would just mentor their children it will help up lift their self-esteem. Helping children that feels that their self-esteem is low can help them in the long run, because it will show that you care. Obesity can cause children to result in behavioral that factors such as boredom, sadness, and anxiety and depression (Childhood Obesity Epidemic, 2008). With all of those behavioral factors playing a part in children lives that can cause a child to overeat. Obese children often experience problems with their peers such as bulling and teasing which have resulted in some children committing suicide. Twenty-six percent of teens who were teased at school and home reported that they had considered suicide before, and only 9 percent had already attempted it (Kiesbye, 2009). The third leading cause of death in adolescents is suicide because they are being made fun of. Knowing that obesity can be linked to suicide parents have to step in and protect their children from bullies. Major health problems come from being obese most of the organs has to work extra hard to function correctly. With the health issue of obesity is rising more and more every day, the children are becoming more prone to more diseases. Diseases like High Blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes are affecting younger children more. The early warning signs of heart disease and high blood pressure have been discovered that more than 60 percent of overweight children from the ages five to ten years old have already developed a few factors of heart disease (Loonin, 2007). High Blood pressure causes the heart to work harder and can damage other organs. Usually Type 2 diabetes was developed later in life and was linked to factors such as excess weight gain, and unhealthy eating. Without major changes, one-third of the children born in the year 2000 will develop Type 2 diabetes during their lifetime, and many others will face obesity related problems like heart disease, and high blood pressure (Obama, 2011). Eliminating most of the fructose and artificial ingredients and the all the foods that clogs the pores will cut the high blood pressure and the Diabetes down. Is childhood obesity taking over the young children lives in the United States' Yes childhood obesity is really becoming a problem in the United States. With this being a medical condition the parents really have to monitor what their children are eating, and how much they are eating. If not the obesity rate will keep going up and getting out of control. Parents have to be the role model for their children they have to show them how to exercise and get the physical activities in. Encouraging your children to eat healthy and better will help boost up their self-esteem. It will make them feel better about themselves with higher self-esteem the children are more likely not to be depressed, sad and attempt suicide. Keeping the children from not overeating and eating the wrong foods will cut down on some of the major health problems. High Blood Pressure and Type 2 Diabetes in children can be cut down a lot when making healthy choices become important. References (2008). Childhood obesity epidemic. Nutrition Health Review, 18.
