At this age there is a clear difference in the play activities that interests boys and girls. They co-operate more in play and develop stable friendships. Children of this age will be developing their persuasion and negotiation skills and will have verbal arguments. They will enjoy chatting together and telling jokes.
13-19 years
Being with friends is likely to be more important than being with family. Young people will have hard choices to make mainly amongst their ‘friends’ peer pressure may cause fall outs and wrong choices. Drugs and alcohol may play a part in those ‘choices’ resulting in bad behaviour or maybe even bullied. Extra caution will be needed when using internet as vulnerable young people could be targeted by internet groomers. Boyfriends/Girlfriends could play a big roll in a young persons life and safe sex will be need to be addressed.
Young people who don’t have a group of friends are likely to feel that they are missing out and maybe become anxious. Some may experience bullying if they are not part of a group. This can have a huge effect on their self-esteem and in extreme cases can result in suicide attempts, to draw attention to their unhappiness. This is a time when young people are also trying to explore their own identity. They may have tastes in music, clothes and activities that are different to those of their parents. This may cause clashes as young people try to develop their own personality and space. They may test the boundaries at home and even at school. As the transition to adulthood is not complete, young people will also at times revert to ‘child-like’ comments, activities and games.
