Chemistry Questions 1-6
1) I only experianced one big difference between the two while making the mixtures. What I observed is that the Baking POWDER required less vinegar then the Baking SODA, which was by about 1/2.
2) a: The active ingredients in Baking Soda are NaHCO3
b: The active ingredients in Baking Powder are sodium, hydrogen, carbon, and three atoms of oxygen.
3) PH measures acidity. The PH level of the mixture went up as we added vi egar. The PH of the two are the same.
4) In both experiments(baking soda&vinegar/baking powder&vinegar), they were both double replacements.
5) The process, operation, or method of determaining the concentration of a substance in soulution by adding to it a standerd regent of known concentration carefully measured amounts until a reaction of definite and known porportions is completed.
create Carbon Dioxide. After enough vinegar is added and the mixture stops bubbling, it is a clearish mixture. This is a exothermic reaction.
NaHCO3 + HC2H3O2 ----> Nac2H3O2 + H2CO3
Analysis:
-The purpose of this lab was to see the difference in PH levels of Baking Powder and Baking Powder. The first step I took was to mix 1/4 cup of water and baking powder. After it was complete I tested the PH level by using a pH strip, which turned yellow, then green, and had a PH level of 8. After I was done with this, I added vinegar to the mixture. When then bubbling was done I measured the PH level of the mixture again. This time the strip quickly turned orange. The PH level was 6. I repeated the same exact steps just instead of baking powder, baking soda. The baking soda/water mixture the strips turned green, with PH of 8. With the vinegar added the strips turned orange and had a PH level of 6.
Conclusion:
-The purpose of this experiment was to see if there was a difference in baking soda and baking powder PH levels . I concluded that the PH levels are the same before and after we added vinegar. I learned that baking soda and baking powder with water have a PH level of 8, but baking powder/baking soda mixed with vinegar have a PH level of 6. This means the acidity has increased. Also, more vinegar is needed for baking soda and water as opppsed to baking powder and water. My conclusion is there is no difference between baking soda and baking powder.
