CheckPoint : Succession and Natural Selection Based on the succession of the ecosystem in the animation it would be a second succession because of the beaver dam prevents the natural flow of the stream creating a pond which floods the valley. It will eventually cause the roots of trees to become water logged and die. The dead trees fall into the water. Once I was making this observation because in what I have read from chapter 6 it says that secondary succession takes place after disturbance destroys the existing vegetation and soil present. In the beaver dam the disturbance to an area that soil exist. In regards to the 4 legged salamander, I do find it very interesting because offspring will likely be born with the same mutation and after a while the 4 legged salamander will eventually die out becuase all the offspring will accumulate the genetics( no back limbs, but small front limbs). Darwin’s theory on Natural selection is the preservation of a functional advantages of that enables a species to compete better. I think that salamander have more advantages when it comes to hide from it’s enemies. The also tent to find food easily. The 4 legged salamander would have a more difficult time hiding or even fitting into a small hole because of their size.
