Charles Darwin Charles Robert Darwin was born on 12 February 1809 in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. He was in a wealthy and well-connected family. He was a grandson of Erasmus Darwin and also Josiah Wedgwood. In 1825, Darwin spent the time with his father as an apprentice doctor. Letter, he was sent to Edinburgh University to study medicine. As the time pass, Darwin found the lectures not as interesting as he expected and disliked surgery. So he left his medical studies even though he enjoyed studying about taxonomy (classification of living things) and marine environment. In 1828, Darwin was sent to Cambridge with the intention to study for Bachelor of Art and the aim of becoming an Anglican parson. However, Darwin also found beetle collecting, botany (Studying of living things but not animals), geology and natural philosophy. Between 1831 and 1836, The key event of Darwin's life took place:his five years voyage around the world on the ship H.M.S Beagle began. While the ship's main mission was to survey and chart coast, Darwin has studied about geology of the area that he has visited and he also collected a large amount of natural history specimens. Perhaps, the voyage on the H.S.M Beagle was the most important inspiration for his later ideas as know as Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. Even though, evolutionary ideas had been common since 18th century, Darwin was able to describe the process (natural selection) by which evolution transpired. Certainly, today and Darwin's lifetime, some religious people were not be able to accept Darwin’s idea. In contrast, many religious people did not find their beliefs to be an obstacle to consideration of Darwin's idea. In the scientific community, the idea of evolution was soon accepted. Darwin's presented mechanism for evolution, especially natural selection took longer to be accept (than the others). - Why Charles Darwin could be considered to be a hero' In my opinion, It could be because Charles Darwin's idea on evolution and natural selection had affected on many scientists' thoughts. The ideas helped them to discover about genes and DNA later and this issue is very important because it helps about treatment on some diseases which has a problem with DNA or genes. For example: Huntington's disease: it caused by faulting genes (one gene is bigger that another).
