Character Analysis for Charlie Glover
Charlie is a Minor character in this musical.
Charlie was born on March 10th 1910 (24 years old when the ship sails) to Mr. Brian Glover and Mrs. Jean Glover in Tallahassee, Florida. He was raised there till he was 14, but moved to New York City when his mother was killed by three racist women that she worked with. Charlie and his father Brian became very close and Charlie revealed his dream of becoming a journalist to Brian when he turned 18. Before his 22nd birthday Charlie was working for the Globe American newspaper. Known around the office as the tall, dark, and handsome kid from the south, Charlie quickly became a favorite but because of his skin color the Globe American was afraid to make him a lead reporter for the paper. After 2 years of bad 2nd rate stories and lots of unfair opportunities; Charlie found his scapegoat upon the SS American. Charlies boss Harry James Stooge sent him and followed Charlie to the boat to see if the secret that Reno Sweeney would be aboard was true. After seeing Charlie and his cameraman capture a lot of pictures with some top dogs in NYC such as Elisha J. Whitney and Reno Sweeney; Harry felt that he couldn't allow Charlie to get the rights to those pictures. He felt that if NYC saw that a black man from Florida could get better pictures then him; that he would get laughed out of town. Harry tried to blackmail Charlie into giving up the pictures, but before he could get the pictures Charlie through the camera over board. Charlie was very motivated to escape now and this incident was the final straw. Charlie had a friend who was on board the ship and he managed to get two sailor outfits for Charlie and his camera man Jim. They worked fast and tricked the purser into into believing they were actual sailors on the ship. After convincing the purser; being a sailor wasn't that hard for Charlie. He was surrounded by beautiful women and all the booze he could drink. Before the ship sailed he caught himself flirting with one of Reno Sweeney's angels Virtue. He didn't want much from her; just a good time. They waved to the crowd as they said “Bon Voyage”. After some “Afternoon Delight” Charlie and Virtue parted ways. Later that night Charlie met another girl by the name of Angie Hill. She actually knew Charlie from back in his teenage years when he use to play baseball for the semi pro negro league of Harlem. They got a drink and went to the deck to enjoy the “De-Lovely” moon light. After catching up they continued to talk throughout the trip, but they never spent another night with each other. Now after a great night with Angie; Charlie was going to meet up with a couple of the sailors to hear about what they all got into the night before, but as they all were talking Bonnie walked in with Miss. Sweeney's Angels. This was the first time Charlie was introduced to his future love Purity. The second he saw her he was smitten. They danced the “Heaven Hop” together but she didn't want to lead him on too quickly. After the dance she kept to herself and it drove Charlie crazy. Instead of talking to other girls he just focused on hanging out with the sailors and helping the purser. He kind of tricked himself into believing he was an actual sailor. One day he bumped into another one of Reno's angels Chastity, and she flipped his attitude back to normal and convinced him that “Anything Goes”. After a great talk and a fun night on the deck; Charlie built up enough courage to approach Purity about his feelings. Surprisingly, she felt the same way and she agreed to go to the party set up for “public enemy number 1”. After a drunken kiss with Bonnie. Purity went to the church service with another sailor and Charlie went with Virtue. After hearing “Gabriel blow his trumpet” and a couple of more drinks; Charlie and Purity made up after going to the double wedding. And they now live happily in London where Charlie is a lead reporter, and Purity is a well known actress on The West End.
