Name: Course: College Composition 1 Section: OAC Date: October 14, 2009 Life Without The Cell Phone According to Wikipedia The free Encyclopedia, the cellular phone is a long-range, electronic device used for mobile telecommunications (mobile telephony, text messaging or data transmission) over a cellular network of specialized base stations known as cell cities. It is very difficult to imagine life without the cellular phone, as it seems to have been around all my life. Life seems to be simpler then. If you had some thing to say to a friend it would have to wait until you got home or until you got to a pay phone. Although there were delays in communication, we also had more patience. Without a cell phone in case of an emergency: such as a car accident or a simple flat tire, I had no way of calling 911 for help. Before I had acquired a cell phone, I remember when I could dial my mother’s or a friend’s telephone number from my memory. Now I cannot even remember my own telephone number anymore because all my telephone contact numbers including my own are stored in the cell phone. If I need to call someone I simply scroll to his or her name in my phone and press “send”. Before the cell phone became apart of my life, it was less convenient for my friends and family to disturb me. I would receive annoying calls asking, “What time will you be home'” or “ where are you'” You were not held accountable for your whereabouts. There were fewer accidents on the road before cell phones. People did not text, talk on the phone or even take pictures while driving before cell phones. Socialization was much more evident before the cell phone. In these times text messaging and emails has become the predominant method of communication, therefore children’s verbal skills are not being fully developed. We live in a fast pace society, where everything that is needed is at our fingertips. The cell phone feeds the need for our instant gratifications.
