Case Study Analysis
In the review of this case I determined that many things went terribly wrong and unfortunately Carl Robbins the gentleman in question did not take the correct route in setting up the new hire orientation; secondly Mr. Robbins waited too long to ensure his paperwork was in order, and finally he did not ensure the meeting room wasn’t already reserved before setting the date of the orientation. There were several ways Carl Robbins could have prevented these issues from ever occurring we’re going to discuss a few of them.
In early April Carl Robbins had successfully recruited several new hires in spite of being new to the company, he hired 15 new employees hoping to get them through orientation and working by June 15th. That gave Mr. Robbins two and a half months to achieve his goal. Mr. Robbins received a phone call from Monica Carroll whom he is doing the recruitment for. On May 15th instructing him on exactly what she wanted done. Mr. Robbins “insured her that task would be taken care of.” Instead of waiting until Memorial Day to finally pull out the files to check them and ensure they were complete.
Mr. Robbins should have ensured that his new hires had their applications done, scheduled days to receive their drug testing, and completed their transcripts. By waiting until after Memorial Day Mr. Robbins left himself very little time to correct these issues. Mr. Robbins failed to use his time wisely and showed poor judgment to assume these people would take care of these issues on their own. By using effective time management, a schedule, and discipline Mr. Robbins would have had his paperwork in order and his newly hired employees would have been able to start on time. For example Mr. Robbins found out about this assignment in early April at that point he knew his deadline; so he should have reserved the meeting room at that time. Then he should have immediately started looking at the potential candidates and scheduled appointments for interviews; at which point he should have also set up dates and times for each applicant to receive their mandatory physicals and drug screening.
There are some things Mr. Robbins did correctly once he realized that he had a problem instead of venting his frustrations out on other employees, he took a walk. This allowed him to cool off, clear his head, and figure out how he was going to correct the issues at hand. Once he returned to the office he could focus and attempt to rectify his problem. Sometimes we need to get away from the problem and try to pick up ideas on what to do. First you should recognize the issue, second you should evaluate the possible solutions, third choose two possible solutions go with the first one and have the second be a backup plan.
Now let us look at the possible solutions and what could have been done differently. As I stated before Mr. Robbins had two and a half months to organize his new hire orientation. One possible solution is effective time management. What is time management' Wikipedia.com states that time management refers to a range of skills, tools, and techniques used to manage time when accomplishing specific tasks, projects and goals. This set encompasses a wide scope of activities, and these include planning, allocating, setting goals, delegation, analysis of time spent, monitoring, organizing, scheduling, and prioritizing. Initially, time management referred to just business or work activities, but eventually the term broadened to include personal activities as well. A time management system is a designed combination of processes, tools, techniques, and methods.
How would have effective time management helped alleviate this problem' For starters Mr. Robbins would have immediately attempted to reserve the meeting room, secondly once he found out that it was already reserved he should have had a secondary meeting location like at another office or hotel suite; and finally instead of waiting until after Memorial Day to look over the files and ensuring they were good to go for the June 15th orientation he should have looked over everything on the 15th of May which would have given him a month to correct any issues that may have come up before his deadline. Along with time management, discipline is another quality that was lacking in Mr. Robbins case. So what is discipline' To discipline thus means to instruct a person to follow a particular code of conduct "order." Usually, the phrase 'to discipline' carries a negative connotation. This is because enforcement of order - that is, ensuring instructions are carried out - is oft "Discipline is the instant willingness and obedience to all orders, respect for authority, self reliance and teamwork. The ability to do the right thing even when no one is watching or suffer the consequences of guilt which produces pain in our bodies, through pain comes discipline." --United States Marine Corps. How could have Mr. Robbins disciplined himself to get the job done' The case doesn’t say exactly what Mr. Robbins was doing with his time at work, by reading the case it shows that he wasn’t exactly working very hard or was very precise with his time. A simple schedule that he adhered too would have been a great solution to this problem.
So let us recap Mr. Robbins failed to show great discipline and a lack of effective time management. He did some things correctly instead of blowing up or going off on someone else he went for a walk to clear his mind and get himself back on track to fix the problem. There was a lot that went wrong and few things that went right. But in the end he is the new campus recruiter for ABC, Inc., and has successfully recruited several new hires in spite of having been at his new job for only six months this makes him very successful and this was just a mere blip on a otherwise remarkable track record.
