Memorandum To: Mr. McGuire From: Ben Parker Date: 9/26/2010 I am proposing to write a Business plan for a company that specializes in underwater boat cleaning and maintenance. There is a high demand for this type of business, around Texas’s coast lines and lakes. The business will specialize in boat cleaning but will also be involved in underwater recovery and searching. The algae growth on the bottom of boats decreases the total performance of the boat in general, and can increase your fuel consumption up to 25%. I am a certified scuba diver and very capable of starting and running this business, with the right resources. I have not heard of any competitor businesses around, but may run into a couple when the time comes. I want to write this report because it will be a good learning experience and it will further educate my knowledge on businesses and how they should work and run. If you have any questions or suggestions please contact me at ben.parker12@buc.blinn.edu Introduction to the Subject Area 2 Audience and Purpose 2 Tentative Plan Outline 2 Pre Bibliography 3 Project Plan 3 Tasks 3 Schedule 4 Role 4 Conclusion 4 Introduction to the Subject Area I’m writing a business plan for a company that does underwater diving work on boats and recovery diving. Description of the Report The business plan is estimated to be around 30 pages long including why the business would be successful and graphs and charts to prove this point. It will also include all the necessary documents, and proofs of insurance to run the business, and proof of a demand, of the services that the business would provide. Audience and Purpose Many boat owners are paying large amounts of money each year to have their boat pulled from the water to have the bottoms cleaned and serviced. With the cleaning services that my business will provide boaters all over Texas will be able to have their boat hulls cleaned without even removing them from the water. The boat owners who do business with me will be on a by monthly cleaning service and will have the underside of their boat in tip top shape. They will be getting a routine maintenance service on their boat hull, prop inspections, zinc replacements when needed, an all inclusive inspection and report on the condition of the boat. Our service is mainly to fight against the barnacle and algae growth that collects as a boat sits in the water. Yes some people would rather pull their boat from the water but many of the 50+ ft houseboats is a pretty big chore to do so. I want to start this company because I believe it would be a successful business. Tentative Plan Outline The basic layout of the business plan would be formatted as the following: 1. Cover Sheet- Business Statement 2. Legal Page 3. Table of contents 4. The Business i. Description of business ii. Marketing iii. Competition iv. Operating Schedule v. Personnel vi. Safety a. Business startup summary vii. List of expenses- total startup expenses viii. Startup assets 1. Cash required 2. Startup inventory 3. Long term assets 4. Total assets b. Services ix. What our company jobs may consist of x. What we do to make our services the best xi. How we do the services c. Prospected Customers—market analysis charts d. Finances xii. Loan applications xiii. Estimated operating cost xiv. License Permits e. Supporting Documents xv. Copy of insurance documents xvi. Copy of Lease or agreement from marina or docking agent xvii. Copy of licenses and other legal documents xviii. Copy of letters of intent from suppliers, etc. f. Worker Compensation and Management 5. Conclusion Pre Bibliography My sources are cited in MLA format 1. Allison Harpold, Marina Manager personal interview on insurance liability and safety. 10/2/2010. allisonharpold@flagshipmarina.com 2. Tasks First off I am planning on interviewing and researching the insurance and permits required for this business and how to do the business safely and accordingly. I’m going to interview an insurance broker for the cost of the insurance and liability vulnerability. The second thing that I need to put together is a list and survey of boat owners who agree with the business and are willing to sign up for this sort of service, and find out if it’s even feasible. And for the final, I need to put together all the running expenses and costs to estimate what this would cost to start up. I’m going to start working on this project during the weekends while I’m in Montgomery Texas near Lake Conroe. One of my childhood best friends works at a marina and his mom manages it. They will be two very good interview candidates. Schedule This is my weekly schedule; I plan on working on my project during the weekends and some during the week when I am allowed by my physics and calculus homework. My position will consist of finding customers, filing for insurance, maintaining safe diving habits, filling dive tanks, supplying divers with the needed supplies, collecting payments, diving, cleaning, and scheduling cleaning periods and times. Conclusion The underwater boat cleaning business needs to be introduced into our boating society, because it offers a whole different market to boat owners towards servicing and maintaining their boat. This business will save people lots of money and have a very profitable market. With the right connections and staff, we should be able to clean and service almost all of the boats in Texas with no problem. Thanks, Ben Parker
