Business Ethics Kathryn Hauver XMGT/216 Rafael Calderon I was employed at a doctor’s office for seven and a half years. I was the surgery coordinator for the practice, along with being an ophthalmic technician and receptionist. I was responsible for the training of the new employees and implementing those people into being well-rounded and excellent technicians. I had an excellent relationship with the doctor’s and the staff and had the ability and the knowledge to oversee most of the staff. I am the kind of person with a belief in that when a person is hired at a job that that person should be completely involved in their work. A person needs to be on top of their game and be available for whatever happens throughout the day while at work. I have high expectations of my fellow co-workers and want them to be working their job in not just a satisfactory way, but also in a way that they are going to excel and be working just as hard as I am. When working for an ophthalmologist and retina surgeon, there are more busy days then less busy days. A person will put in a lot of hours and will hardly have a chance to sit down and take lunch. With that being said, my ethical values stand strong in any work environment. I go above and beyond the call of duty while I am working. I trained a lot of the employees to be able to scribe for a doctor and check patients in to have them examined in a fast but proficient manner, as the doctor wanted it that way. If my trainees are not meeting up to the standards of the doctors, then it can and will come back on me. I was valued an excellent employee and remained the “it girl” for many years with this office. There was a woman who was hired as a technician. She did not have any experience in the ophthalmology field. So, I had to train her to do everything. This included the check in of patients, checking pressures on patients, scribing for the doctors, setting up in house procedures, the installation of medications, consent forms, along with the front desk software to have the knowledge to make appointments for patients, inputting data into the computer for patient registration, all of the front desk responsibilities. She was unable to keep up with the way that patient flow needed to be. Myself, and the other technicians had to pick up her slack. She just did not value her job as much as I did. Again, I am a hard worker and believe that if a person is hired to do a job, then they need to make sure that they are doing their part. If they are unable to work in a fashion that is unacceptable, then this person should be let go. Obviously, you give them chances to improve on their work. If there is no improvement, then letting them go is what needs to be done. I had multiple encounters with girl on her work ethic and how she was going to accomplish these tasks that were required of her and she was very nonchalant about her job. She obviously did not want to be there, but did not want to lose her job based on needing one at that moment. The situation that occurred in the last week she was there, threw a flag up to me. She would take lunch breaks that would be longer then an hour, everyday. There were many technicians that ate and worked at the same time. We had to. It was the only way we would be able to survive. She would leave patients charts that needed to be checked in for me or the other technicians and go to lunch. She would come back from lunch and sit down at her desk, while other people were working. She would text on her phone. It was very unethical to me. My question in my head, is where are her morals' Does she think that everyone else would pick up her slack because that is what always would happen' This day, I completely lost it. I said to her, what are you doing and what makes you think that you can sit down after an hour lunch break, while everyone else is breaking his or her back to do the job you were hired to do' It escalated into an extremely loud abrasive argument, where I proceeded to tell the office manager that she has no moral values because she wants everyone else to do her job, the job she was hired to do. She takes hour-long lunch breaks while the rest of us, work and tries to eat our cold lunches. She is very inconsiderate to other people. The office manager told me I needed to take a walk and come back after I cooled down. I then proceeded to tell my office manager that she does not want to work here; it is obvious by her work. My office manager told me that my actions were uncalled for and if this has been the situation, then why was she not informed. I told her that we have informed you, you chose not to hear the technicians and I am not the kind of person to sit back and let someone walk all over me or anyone else in this office that is doing their job. I ended up getting written up at work and the woman whom I had words with turned in her resignation. I think that there are some social pressures that were influenced in this situation. There is always someone who is egging on a situation. There is always that quiet person who doe not like confrontation. I happen to be the person who does not mind confrontation as long as there are morals behind it. If she had done her job, then there would never have been a huge blow up from me. Another co-worker did a lot of instigating and made me aware of what this woman was not doing and how she was working when I was not around. She made it completely clear that she did not like her and wanted her gone. However, my explosion at her was based on her work ethic and my work ethic and they clashed. She was a nice person and she was fun to be around, but I stand strong in my beliefs of how a workplace should be handled. Work hard while your there and have fun when you go home. If I were involved in another dilemma as this one, I would probably approach the situation with less attack. I would take the person aside in a closed room and talk to her or him and find out what their reasoning is behind their not so great effort at work. I would tell the person that I believe in working hard and being on top of my game. So in the same sense, I want those expectations from my co-workers. Is there anything that I can do to help you improve your time here at work to complete each patient or project in a better-suited timeframe' I would still be somewhat aggressive toward the situation because I believe that if I would be to soft, then I would be a joke. I want to help people become a better employee but also stand strong in what I believe in.
