Business Courses in Philanthropy
Strategic Issues and Problems
Recently, quite a few top business schools have realized the importance of ethics and responsibility. As a result, philanthropy is taught as an academic subject in these schools. Under this circumstance,Cal State University Fullerton also takes the addition of philanthropy course into consideration. Whether the MBA program in Cal State University Fullerton should offer a course in philanthropy is a debated topic.
Evaluation and Analysis
In terms of long-term benefits, offering a philanthropy-related course is a win-win policy. Both students and the business school could gain benefits. As for students, the course allows students to realize the impact of their money. By denoting money and time to nonprofit groups, students learn how to deal with their money more reasonable and achieve personal value in the community. To some extent, the addition of philanthropy-related course helps students strengthen sense of social responsibility. As for business school, it could meet students’ desire that make an impact in the community. From the perspective of long-term goal, business school makes contribution to the society by providing more qualified business students, thereby enhancing school’s society reputation and attracting more students to enroll in the MBA programme.
Alternatives
Cal State University Fullerton faces two alternatives. Like other business schools, CSUF could offer a philanthropy-related course. Undoubtedly, CSUF is bound to face difficulties in the probe of new course. Few problems, such as fund, human resources and course arrangement, may confuse Fullerton. However, looking for short-term benefits is shortsighted. CSUF could enhance society reputation, followed by increased public support and students sources. Considering the total cost and feasibility of offering a new course, CSUF could offer a philanthropy-related course as an elective at first. If the philanthropy-related course plan is implemented successfully, CSUF could choose to offer the course to all MBA students.
Cal State University Fullerton’s other alternative would be to refuse to offer such a new course. Although it’s hard to see the side effects of not offering a philanthropy-related course in the short-term, it does harm to school’s long-term development. It’s possible that the MBA students in Fullerton would lose competitive advantage over those in other business schools in the near future.
Plan of Action:
From a long-term development standpoint, Cal State University Fullerton should offer a philanthropy-related course as an elective. To stimulate students’ active learning, the class should provide students with a small amount of money, which would be denoted to local nonprofit groups. The MBA programme should cooperate with that of other business colleges of California state universities. Not only could Fullerton share resources with its partners, but also gain enough public attraction to acquire corporate sponsorship. The first step is to persuade other California state universities to gain their support. Then, Cal State University Fullerton should work with partners to seek corporate sponsorship. With sufficient sponsorship,Cal State University Fullerton would implement plan work with its’ partners more efficiently.
