The GO NEGOSYO was a summit among the country’s business leaders , rising businessmen and the students who are referred to as “the country’s future”. I was excited about the fact that a lot of business students from different schools will be able to join especially those from public schools or one’s who don’t have as much opportunity as Lasalle Students to be exposed to businessmen of such caliber. I think that it’s very important that the youth entrepreneurs are guided well that our dreams and plans are managed well and this summit was an opportunity to listen to those who have made it to where we aspire to be., and whose techniques we may adopt or pattern after.
However chaotic the event was, (more on that later) It was a positive attempt to cultivate the young entrepreneur’s mind. At 8 am I arrived to an overcrowded front entrance with students spilling over on to the drive way. I decided to return at 10:30 and eventually got in.
Seminars were held in a room that could only hold about 80 people a time; However, there was a projector outside by the lobby that continually replayed all the previous speeches given by the speakers. By the time I was thru waiting in line to get into the World Trade Center and once again waiting in line for registration, it was already noon time.
What I observed and learned from this event was the collective insights from the snippets of advice and success stories of the speakers, and the environment; students from different schools, and the business exhibit.
I’ve realized that there is abundance of information, raw materials, business opportunities yet there is a big shortage of Filipino Business Moguls. Philippine’s economy is ran by the Chinese and Spanish-Filipino businessmen . The Filipinos are still trailing way behind, still stuck in the small thinking that a food business is a family run catering business or that a sari-sari store is a sole proprietor business.
One thing I learned is that there is a business opportunity wherever you are. Alot of the speakers rattled on about inspirational stories and how hard work has payed off greatly. Then I thought, ofcourse they’re business men they’d be smarter than to give away all their secrets to success. I find that their stories can be seen as a motivation. While hardwork is important, we first need to know what we’re working towards.
After putting up a business, we then need to ask ourselves how we can push it some more. How do we attract more customers, how do we cater to a bigger and wider market. We start to macro manage. Slowly planning expansion, hiring new people and delegating work. As heads of companies we see the direction we want to go and steer our business towards it. We continually study, research, consult and etc.
As I looked around the wtc there were atleast hundreds of other business students all eager to start a business, all eager to be successful.
Anyone can start a business but not everyone can be successful not everyone can push the business to it’s maximum capability, and that’s worth learning. How different am I from these hundreds others hungry for success'
I left the summit with more questions than answers. Healthy questions that I need to ask myself and learn about. In a nutshell, the summit to me was an eye opener to what I need to know more about. Speakers glaze over their businesses and I want to know more about those vague details that brought them to the top. I’ve suddenly had a mini panic attack as I just realized how important my past classes were are and how little I payed attention.
I realized that Having a goal and being hardworking is not enough. Every next person can be hardworking if she wants to. I need to find an edge, to learn more about my strengths and work with it. Also, to focus on learning about how to get to my goal, get my hands in deeper.
Short and Long term plans, where we want to take the business. Anyone can work hard, and many people work had aimlessly. We need to know what we want, Know and decide how to get there, and then work hard for it.
