Bureaucracy and You Gerald Washington POS 110 7/24/2011 Timothy Dale Bureaucracy and You The Bureaucracy regulates my life in many ways from the time I wake up till I go to sleep. The Federal Bureaucracy job is to achieve specific goals. The federal bureaucracy has roughly about 500 departments, agencies, administration, authorities, and commission that we use in our daily life. There are many jobs the Bureaucracy preformed. Like most Americans we think we pay too much in taxes and how the taxes go to things that we the people don’t need. The federal bureaucracy is working for us in many ways, one way is like when we wake up by a clock you know the time is right because the National institute of standards and technology keeps the official time. We the people take these things for granted like the use of our cell phones, satellite television, and wireless computers, these things are possibly because of the federal communications commission. Another way the bureaucracy help us in our life is the food and drug administration. This agency helps with keep the food safe for us to eat. It is nice how I can prepare myself on what kind of weather we are having. A glance outside where it shows ominous clouds. I go to my local news and check the weather. This tells us how we track bad or good weather. The National Weather service is the ones where we get the information from and we take it for granted. I know I go to work during the week and really don’t worry about my rights and wellbeing at work because of the safety and health act, which they work to protect you from unsafe and unhealthy work conditions. The laws protect me from discrimination based on race, gender, religion, national origin, or disability. There are many more jobs that the federal bureaucracy has that protect our everyday life that we take for granted and which I have a different viewed of how we are protected. The bureaucracy that surprises me the most is the FDA, The Food Drug Administration. This is one agency that I take for granted every day. I go to get food from the store and or my refrigerator and don’t have to worry about if the food is safe to eat and don’t have to worry about getting sick. The food and Drug Administration is the oldest protection agency in the U.S federal government. “ Its origins can be trace back to the appointment of Lewis Caleb Beck in the patent office around 1862 to carry out chemical analyses of agricultural products”(fda.gov).The FDA did not get Its name until 1930. The FDA was founded with single chemist in the department of agriculture. In 1906 the passage of the pure food and drug act went through. This was a law that took a quarter of a century, that helps protect interstate commerce in adulterated and misbranded food and drugs. The person that was responsible for this was Harvey Washington Wiley, was the chief chemist of the bureau of chemistry. The food and drug administration is an agency that protects and promotes the public health and how they do that is through the regulation and the supervision of food safety, tobacco products, dietary supplements, prescription drugs and even veterinary products and cosmetics that they protect for us. The FDA is led by a Commissioner of food and drugs, appointed by the President of the United States. The 21st and current Commissioner is Margaret A. Hamburg; Margaret has served as the Commissioner since February 2009. The FDA have been in the news recently , in 6/9/2011 “ after years of sweeping the issue under the rug and hoping no one would notice, the FDA has now finally admitted that chicken meat sold in the United States Of America contain arsenic, a cancer causing toxic chemical that’s fatal in high doses. But the real story is where this arsenic comes from; it’s added to the chicken” (By Mike Adams). Until this study the poultry industry and the FDA have denied the arsenic being fed to the chickens the excuse they gave was the arsenic came from their feces this was not true they were giving it to the chickens. Two facts about the FDA, one is since 1994 the food manufacturers have been required to include food labels on all food product packaging, this was order by the federal food and drug administration, so that we the people can have information about the food that we purchase. This is important to us because we can see what is going into our bodies and how to maintain a healthy life. But is this all true facts about the things that are on the labels and this is something that we the people will probably will not have a true answer to this question Are every food that is coming into the United States is safe and are some foods aloud just for money sake to make someone rich like medication that are allowed to go on the shelf’s and then are pulled when someone get sick. Another fact about the Federal food administration is that they rule making and enforcement body in the United States for food, drugs, medical devices, vaccines and biological products. The agency that I was least interested are none I think they are all important to our safety. These entire agency seems like they work together to keep us safe, I would think you world need the other to get their point to the people. I know that all of the agencies can keep an eye on everything that happens here in the United States, I think they do a good job on keeping us safe. Like since the 9, 11 I think the Government has done a great job on watching the United State what’s going in and what’s coming out of this country. It is important to have the federal bureaucracy to be neutral with regard to partisan politics because is expected to help you do your own homework. We the people should want to know what it’s happening in our country and about the exports that are coming into the United State so that we can put a stop or just to have a voice.
