During childhood and adolescents, social skills are being developed and sharpened. One factor that may have mental and physical consequences in development is bullying. The acts of bullying create fear and limits the abilities of their victims to have in building confidence or finding their personalities. Individuals that are targeted by bullying can be affected in ways that may lower their self esteem.
Bullying is an issue to study in human development because it is a growing issue that affects people in a negative way. Bullying has been overlooked in the past as a way or stage of life a person may go through. The victim can have mental or physical problems that may stick with them for a long time. The individual that is considered the bully may have problems that may need to be handled on a professional level in the future. Bullying is determined by meeting three elements. The first element is that the bully actions intend to harm the victim. The second element is the bully’s actions are repetitive. The last element shows a power differential between the victim and the bully (Jacobsen & Bauman, 2007).
The components of bullying are physical, verbal, and relational. Pushing, fighting, hitting, kicking, and other acts of violence to a person are examples of physical bullying. Teasing and name calling are examples of verbal bullying. Relational bullying is a form of indirect bullying. Gossiping and spreading rumors are examples of relational bullying. Another form of relational bullying is when a group of peers purposely leave an individual out of its group. Jacobsen & Bauman (2007) research states that many teachers and counselors do not interfere with relational bullying, but take physical bulling very seriously.
Individuals who show signs of any weakness tend to get bullied. People who wear glasses, have excess of acne, and people who are different are some example of those who may get bullied. Individuals who show sign that they are submissive and not likely to stand up for themselves can be targeted by bullies. Gender and sexual orientation can be influences in bullying.
From a young age, males and females are taught that they should behave in a certain manner that is considered normal to society. A boy was playing dolls with a little girl on the sidewalk and another boy that lives in the street refused to come two houses to play with him because he was playing with a girl baby doll. This proves how even a child's perception of sexual orientation can influence ones behavior. The ways some individuals express their gender identity are targets for bullies.
The victims of bullying self-esteems can reach an all time low when targeted by bullies. Their confidence that they have been building can be diminished. It is very hurtful to the person who has been bullied. Some individuals can still be affected by bullying from the past for many years. The bully may have some underlying issues. These issues can vary from being bullied at home, having a low self image, and acting like the people who are a part of their lives. They pick on and hurt others to make themselves feel better. Suicide, anxiety, depression, hate, and other mental issues can result from bullying.
Bullying can cause several different out comes with in a family. A person’s family can be the reason why the individual is either the bully or the victim. An individual who witness bullying at home can emulate the bully in the household. The victim of bullying can come closer with their family, if they stick together and work on how to find ways to resolve the problem with the bully. Some parents do not think that bullying is a problem and that is just something that happens all the time.
In conclusion, bullying is wide spread throughout America. It is hurtful and wrong. It is important to understand the elements and types of bullying. This understanding can help professionals identify when bullying is happening. The self esteem of both the bully and the victim can have negative consequences that may affect them mentally and physically.
