Broadway Liverpool-Making/Repairing of society-inequalites-differences * After a major fire in Broadway indoor market how forced changed happened on both roads * The closure of a public house giving way to the change in nightlife with the influx of students * Many big name superstores have come and gone changing hands in the same location * Now many of local business have made way for cheaper superstores e.g.: (poundland) Market Fire Due to a fire in the market, Broadway suffered for a time while the re-construction took place, therefore this affected the community leaving people to travel out of there comfort zone for simple amenities. When finally repaired the market had seem to lose its sense of community and togetherness and never seemed to have the same buzz. Now repaired many things had changed such as the stalls, now very few an with different cultures occupying these stalls with the different goods needed for their cultures although the diversity is slowly repairing the hustle and bustle that once was in the market some of the older generation talk fondly about how it was then, to how it is now with some trepidation to change. Pub closures For this example am using one particular public house once known as Valentino’s, this well-known establishment was the hub for the older generation and the newer generation for many years until its closure in 2005 now with its closure the building lay dormant for many years until 2009 when it became a performing arts school, now this particular area of Broadway is a haven for students and professional artist from all over the country again this major change to just one building has made its mark on the existing community with the many different cultures and new shops opening to accommodate for this new influx of people. Supermarket Change Local Business Change There were many local or small business dotted all over Broadway for many years but with time comes change, and the small businesses lost out, very few are left compared to when I can remember being a young lad. Now were once stood the local butcher or baker demand for cheaper goods has paved the way for discount stores to dominate this small stretch of road were once a community stood by their local businesses, it’s been hard for people to continue with the constant change. There still remains a few were loyal people go to the local butcher or café for goods and also for a chat with the many people who have entered these premises over the years. I personally use these premises as a means to meet family or for the goods I need an even now many people I now use these business as a meeting place whether it be outside or inside these mini community centres that they have become. Why is it like that Broadway is the way it is today due to a fire that brought a forced change that people wern’t expecting or prepared for, but the change made Broadway the way it is today a very multi-cultural place to be. Many peoples social lives had changed drastically with the change, from the café they used for that sense of community, that had now gone and become a clothes stall, to the butcher they’d gone to for years for their goods while conversing on their days events, it was never going to be the same meeting place to a lot of the community due to the radical change and the sense of loss. New additions to the exsisting market added to that sense of loss, but the change brought new and fresh ideas in that a lot of the community adapted to, Like the new signage on the stall fronts to the ethnic clothes, foods and spices which intrigued many not only the material goods that was brought in with the change the community grew and changed to fit all cultures and there demands.
