I had waited for nine months and the day had finally arrived, A few short hours my son would make his entrance into the world. The nurses at the Watauga Hospital had me prepped and ready for my planed c-section. When I got into the operating room the doctor put me to sleep. Two hours later I woke up surrounded by doctors. So I asked “Can I see Hunter my son'” I never imagined my simple question would be the start of my worst nightmare until the doctor said like nothing was wrong “He is not here we sent him to Brenner’s Children’s Hospital, because he had some complications.” “Well I am leaving to go see him.” I replied. The doctor reminded me that I was cut hip to hip like I had forgotten, not wanting me to leave he left my room. I pulled the IV out of my arm. I met the doctor in the hallway, without any hesitation I firmly said “You can give my permission or I this hospital anyway,” Now yelling I finished “My son will not die down there alone!” Without anything further my mom and me where on our way to Winston. When we finally arrived at Brenner’s Children’s Hospital, we were directed to the third floor there we would find the NICU. I signed what seemed like a million documents to get clearance to enter through the doors. Once inside the NICU, the nurse had me and my mom a set of sanitary scrubs and directed us to the sink so we could wash our hands before putting them on, once we were clean and dressed. The nurse pointed us to a very large room with fifteen baby beds. I seen Hunters name on the first bed to my right. All I seen was a blanket of rainbow colored wires and tubes. I started to cry nothing in my life could have prepared me for how sickly he appeared. The doctor walked over to me and my mom, explaining that they had run all the necessary testing. He would let me know the results as soon as they arrived. After a long restless night, expecting the worse and praying for a miracle. Bright and early the next morning, the doctor called us into his extremely cramped office, with the test results from their lab. The doctor spoke very softly when he asked my mom “To have a seat'” I was already in a wheelchair due to the high volume of blood I was losing from my incision. When my mom did not sit in the chair behind her, the doctor firmly pressed down on her shoulders till moms rear-end was sitting correctly on the chair. “I believe it is best you be seated while we discuss your grandson Hunter’s results.” The doctor said speaking to my mom in a more serious tone of voice. Without any kind of pause the doctor began to say “Hunter does in fact have what is called an imperforated anus, which means he does not have an anal opening. I became over come with fear, unable to give even the simplest response. “If you agree I need your signature on this consent form.” The said handing me the paperwork. Still speechless I quickly gave my needed signatures. The doctor finished by saying “I will schedule your son for the operating room for in the morning.” I nodded my head with acceptance as I rolled my wheelchair out through the office door. My mom followed close behind me but we did not utter a single word. All my fears were coming true, I just kept wondering if my son would make it through the procedure. Would he even have a chance to live his life' I was horrified with these thoughts in my head. I just wanted to my son to be healthy, was that too much to ask' It didn’t take me very long to get back in the room with my son. At this point I did not want to leave his side, for I did not know if he would live that long life I had imagined for him. I sat at his bedside the entire night only leaving to use the restroom. My mind was full of everything that he could accomplish if he had the chance, he could be anything he wanted to be. If he would only be given the chance so that he could prove himself. After a long restless night, expecting the worst and praying for a miracle. The nurses came in to get my son. “It is time; your son’s surgery will begin shortly.” The very soft spoken nurse said. She continued “You can meet us on the second floor; your mom is waiting on you in the hall.” I met my mom in the hall where we would get on the elevator to get to the second floor. When we arrived on the second floor, you could see my son Hunter through a glass window straight in front of us. The doctor was beside him, me and my mom watched as he put my son to sleep. The nurse came out in the hall, and said “You will have to wait in the waiting room until the surgery is complete.” “We will let you know as soon as we are finished.” The nurse continued to say. I and my mom found our way around the corner and into the cold empty waiting room. I rolled myself up beside the window, all you could see was the roof on the lower level of the hospital. My mom sat down right beside me, and took my hand. We didn’t speak very much as we waited for the doctor to return with what we hoped would be very good news. It seemed like we had sat there for days on end, when we heard a door shut down the hall, and the doctor walked in with a smile on his face. The doctor said “The surgery went great! Your son has an anal opening.” I was overcome with joy and the biggest smile spread across my face. “But your son Hunter is not out of the water yet. We still need to run die through his intestine to make sure it is completely connect like it should be.” The doctor continued. The doctor finished by saying “the nurses are taking your son back to the NICU where he can overcome the sleeping gas; you can go up and see him shortly.” My son Hunter had beat the odds, he was out of surgery and still alive. Over the next few days they would struggle to get to accept a bottle to drink from, On the third day of trying to force him to eat, he finally took the bottle I was so proud because I was the one holding him when he finally understood the concept of the baby bottle. It was long after his first bottle they mixed in a blue die in with his formula, now we had to wait for his ultrasound of his intestine, I have never wanted to see a sign of foreign color as the result from the ultrasound, then on my son Hunters that day. A blue color meant his intestine was intact. And like a miracle the results came back exactly like me and my mom had hoped. My son Hunter spent three more days in recovery, before we got the approval to bring my son home. Finally after all the heartache and worry I was bringing my Miracle son Home. He would still have needed frequent check-ups to make sure his anal opening was healing correctly, but we would soon be home with our friends and family to celebrate our lives together.
